View Full Version : WordPress installed, but now what?
I went through the install for WordPress within Powweb, no problems. Got an email confirming successful setup and a link, "www.mysite.com/wp-admin." I click on the link and get a Fatal error. How do I get into the WordPress interface to develop a web page? Thanks
What's the exact error that you get?
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: get_bloginfo() in /www/s/mydomain/htdocs/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 304
This is a problem with the wp-config.php file.
Is your config file correct, double check all your database info is ok and that your DB_HOST is set correctly to "mysqlxx.powweb.com" where xx is the server number.
If you still can't get it to work after verifying your config file is correct and that you have correctly set up your mySQL database try downloading WordPress again from the WordPress site and copying only the wp-config file out, changing it and uploading the new one you have made over the old one.
That should hopefully fix it.
Thanks for the help. I still could not figure out what to do and had to call support. It turned out my password on the server did not match.
Now that I'm in, I can't figure how change my site. I "wrote a post" but don't know how to commit it to my webpage. It still shows under construction. I'm new to all this and know very little.
When you write a post you have to "publish" it in order for it to display on your blog. This lets you write drafts etc. if you want.
... having thought more on what you said do you mean wordpress is not showing up on your site and the under construction placeholder is still there? If this is the case you may have installed wordpress to a folder e.g. domain.com/wordpress. To see your blog you'll need to go to that directory. If you want it to show up on the main domain (ie. domain.com) it can be moved there easily (just ask :)) or you can set up a page to forward the visitor.
If this is the problem just say and I can give you some more detailed advice :)
I don't know where Wordpress is installed. I clicked on the link at https://ops.powweb.com/?module=packages&package_id=139891&submodule=Web%20Site&service_type=HTTP. I looked around in the file manager but still don't know.
This is odd.
From what you said earlier WordPress is installed in your "htdocs" folder and so it should be viewable on your main domain. If you were able to make a post then it must have installed correctly...
Did you use the PowWeb auto install? Auto installs can be unreliable so it might be a problem here. I would suggest perhaps removing the PowWeb install (if you haven't modified it too much or added too much content) and install it yourself - I have written an install guide which you can see here (http://www.soulflame.net/technical-help/powweb-wp-install-guide/).
Alternativley if you are wanting to start from scratch but don't know how I would be willing to help you set it up (for free I guess cos I'm nice ;)) if you would like to do so you can PM me and I can talk you through the install or I could set it up for you.
I check my PMs several times a day so contacting me shouldn't be a problem. If you would feel more comfortable trusting a mod I think alphadesk would probably be willing to help out too.
I would not bother with the auto install for Wordpress, it is perhaps the most simple install I have ever seen. Once you get it up and running, you may want to look at phpgiggle.com and see if that appeals to you. You can see the script in action on my homepage http://www.tucsontactical.com

gnc ... check it now and read your PM.
Should be good to go.
Just curios if you got your blog working gnc?
Was it a wp-config.php problem after all? Hope all is well on the blogging front :)

Well done alphadesk :D
There seem to be a lot of people who have had problems with the automated install of WordPress. Perhaps somebody should nudge PowWeb to take a look at it and fix it up ;)
Alphadesk got me going. Thanks much.
You were right Fluke. The auto-install was the problem. Alphadesk reloaded Wordpress and now I'm up and running. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to create a new folders in ftp, wp-content/themes so I can upload new themes. Any advice?
Thanks for the help.
**edit** I got a folder (or "Dir") created. I tried it once and nothing happened. The second time it worked. They should call it "folder" and not "Dir".
Yeah, I do think WebFTP could do with some cosmetic changes - it is a handy tool though.
If I were you I would think about getting an FTP applictaion to handle uploading and downloading to your website.
There are a number of good free ones out there that you can try (I'm sure someone will hop in and recommend one or two ;)). It would make uploading new themes a lot easier too.

fluke - excellent tutorial! thank you!
Your welcome :D
re: FTP programs, I have seen one or two people on the forums recommend FileZilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/). Never used it myself but it looks ok. THere are also programs like WS_FTP and cuteFTP etc. Give them a try, much handier than webFTP ;)
