help setting up paypal ipn

Please could anyone direct me to a link or a tutorial that shows you how to set up paypal ipn? I am totally clueless I have downloaded the how to from the paypal page but it might as well be written in chinese for all I can understand it! :(

I am also trying to install this. (see above post about wiping out my whole site!) I may have run into trouble because I was messing around trying to place an EXT file in my root catalog. I don't know where the root catalog is, nor do I know where the EXT file is supposed to go. Clear instructions would be a big help. Also, to use Paypals return option, they insist you provide the correct return URL. What exactly would that be?
