View Full Version : Missing web content
I just created a website with Web Builder as a project for my college course. When I try to view it in any web browser (IE, Mozilla, Netscape N, Opera) it does not show the picture or navigational menu on the right side of the web page. This only happens on my computer, when I ask others to view the website from their computer they see everthing just fine. Why does my computer not show the whole web page?
My URL is: www.webindi.com (http://www.webindi.com)
Have you tried clearing your cache on your computer? You will probably have loaded copies into each browser during development so it's not unreasonable for the browser to have kept a copy. Clearing the cache for each browser may help. Alternatively, are you launching the correct file?
I clear the cache about once a week. And what do you mean by launching the correct file? thanks!
I don't have access to a machine that allows clearing of the cache so I can only state in general terms:
To clear the cache in IE6:
Tools >> Internet Options >>
There will be an option to clear old files - I can't remember exact term.
There are similar routes in Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, FireFox etc.
Your pages are made up of more than one file, right? Make sure you launch the index.htm or index.html file if you've used html.
The major problem that I am having is that everyone can view my full website. When i view it from my computer the navigational menu and a picture is missing from the right side of the page. This only happens from my computer. I have tried all the popular browsers and none have changed the layout. I am under the impression that it is not the browser at all but something with my computer is not letting me see the full page.
I figured out the problem with my computer. Once I went and turned off my Norton Internet Security the whole site all of a sudden showed up. I don't know why it would block that kind of content though. Thanks for the help IanS! You've added to your reputation.

NIS Blaech! I frequently have unexplainable problems on many web pages using it.
The problem is more than likely caused by the fact that most of the page seems to be rendered using JavaScript functions which write the html to the borwser. As such any browser or person who is using a program to disable JS will not see the whole of the page.
NIS and many other software firewalls will block content by name as well. Any image that is named banner will be blocked, and there is a very long list of file names that are blocked by default.

My problem with them is that you never really know what's going on. How many people by computers that come with NIS and then don't visit many sites because they don't work correctly and they have no idea why. I simply don't like software firewalls. Go out and purchase a $50 router and dump NIS, ZoneAlarm, or whatever else and you'll be better off in my opinion.
My subscription expires this month for NIS, so I will probably not renew. I like to see my web page without having too turn off the NIS. ;)

Depending the version and the setup, you should find a 'Web Contents Options' tab, either from the icon in the systray, or from the browser toolbar (if you have NIS showing there - in IE).
Search for your website in the list to the left, or use Add Site. Then in the right, use the two Settings tabs to adjust the webpage screening for your website. You will want to allow Javascript, possibly cookies, animated images (gif's), and possibly Flash content.
Click OK and pages from your website will be screened with these special settings.
Some URLs can still be taken our cause of naming. To determine if this has happened, open the log viewer from the menu in the NIS systray icon. Click on Content Blocking and Privacy to see what NIS is blocking. It will tell you why and you can add the string to the ad blocker list, but tell to 'allow'. The add blocker list is the third tab in the Web Contents Option.
Once you understand the functionality of NIS, you can tweak each website to your liking. I have many sites I don't get to see a single ad (better not le them know!).
