I have a Compaq 1200-XL106 laptop that I just maxed the RAM out on (160MB) and I want to know if Windows XP will run on it. The processor is a 467 mHz AMD K6-2 with 3DNow.

Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx) are the official M$ specs for XP Pro. You should be able to (just) run it.

I'm running it on a 600MHz laptop with 166MB of memory. It runs ok, not great, but ok. I use it for surfing the net mostly which it does just fine. It really works the page file though when starting and switching apps.

I wouldn't think about putting XP on that. It will *just* run (probably) but not very well and you can bet it will take a long time to start up - stick Windows 98SE on it and you will be fine.

OK. I left Win 98SE on it. I installed a Microsoft MN-520 Wireless Network Adapter using the supplied CD. I get two solid green lights when it boots to Windows but no internet. What can I do?

Here are the requirements for that card from Microsoft System Requirements (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/systemrequirements.aspx?pid=005) :
Microsoft Wireless Base Station (sold separately) or other 802.11b/Wi-Fi® device or network
Computer with an available Type II Extended PC Card slot
Microsoft Windows® 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows 2000* Professional, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Home Edition operating system
Setup features and functionality are limited on Windows 2000.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_ts_setup_bs_bbm.mspx)

Make sure you have a B compatible access point for using this wireless network card.

Base station - check.
Laptop with PCMCIA slot for MN-520 - check.
Windows 98 - check.
Wirless-B compatible access point - check.

It's all there.

1 - How do I find out the name of the network on the XP machines that are on the network that I want this Win98SE machine on as well?

2 - Do I have to run the WinXP network setup wizard on the 98SE machine if the host machine is an XP box? (which it is, by the way)

(which it is, by the way)1) On one of the XP machines, right clicking on 'My Computer' (not a shortcut to My Computer) should give you a screen which has buried somewhere the network or domain name.

2) I believe that is the case, but haven't done it as I've not got Win98 machines on my network.

OK. I found the domain name setting on my XP box.

Right click on My Computer. Select Properties. Click on the Computer Name tab and it will show you what Workgroup your XP machine belongs to.

I will run the wizard on the laptop and let you know what happens. I believe there is a WEP Key issue here and the tech department at her place of business will have to enter the WEP Key in order for that laptop to gain access to the Internet via the wireless router.

Thanks!

Yes, if the system is to be used in any kind of business environment then they will need to set up the security for the 'Wireless' connection at the place of work.
