There's a real good article you should read before you vote for Microsoft.

Well, if I didn't have to use Windows to be able to help my customers who are hooked on it, I would use Linux full time.

Linux, BeOS and all of the "nix" OS systemsAs are far better than MS will ever be. However they are still a long way from being the average computer users choice for their home computer. But they are getting there.

As that article points out, you can still use an older computer for a "nix" OS and it's a good idea to consider setting up a Linux box to act as a gateway if you have any of the highspeed connections. It sure messes with the kiddie hackers that try getting past a Linux box :)

Microsoft ALL the way ! Main reason, because I am very satisfied with it's stabilty and user friendly. Most important, it plays all my latest games which is the most important.

I don't care of freeBSD is stable or Linux powerful, and I am not gonna set a server, but do they meet my requirments? Nope.

As a developer of shareware programs, I'm currently focussing on Windows. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that Linux & Unix are powerful platforms.

I might take on Linux support in the future? Borland's Delphi environment (my favorite <g>) has been ported to Linux (and is called "Kylix"), so any transition to Linux wouldn't be hard to do for me... ;)

The reason I choose not to support Microsoft is their cowardly ways of trying to destroy Netscape.

Atomic-Design, netscape sucks itself. I hate that browser.

I'm not a big MS fan, but I have to say that Netscape dropped the ball long ago and ALL of the blame for it's drop in popularity can not be completely laid upon MS.

MS didn't play fair when it started trying to force NS out, but even with their embedded IE in Win98, you could still use NS without any problems.

NS (AOL) dropped the ball when they refused to follow the W3C standards. Now they are playing catch-up and even if the new NS is great and wonderful, there are too many people that are "hooked" on IE. So even with AOL's large user base that will soon be looking at NS for a web browser, I doubt that NS will ever be the leader that it once was.

For user-friendly and network-friendly - Microsoft.

For real power and programming ability - Linux.

Too many programs are out there that are for Microsoft...and the 'public' loves it. But Linux needs to take a big step to catch up and promote their abilities to the 'public'.

Its really up to 'public' perception, and that Microsoft.

Sorry for using 'public' so much.:)

Yeah, I personally use both. One machine dual-runs 2000/XP, the other runs linux. I have a development/staging server, and I don't want anything to do with IIS, thank you very much... Apache for that baby...

My laptop runs a micro-distro of linux, mainly for coding on the go.

My wife's computer runs Win98, but I'm slowly convincing her to try linux for a month...

Windows is great for what it does. It DOES crash often. Often enough that there are websites dedicated to that 'feature' and virtually anyone who has touched a computer will instantly know what you mean when you say "blue screen"...

Linux is BY FAR the better operating system for serious computer users. It is BY FAR the more stable, and BY FAR the more secure. That's not rhetoric, it just IS. The reason that M$ owns the majority of the world's disk partitions is that they have been ingenious/ruthless in their marketing, and because no one has AS OF YET developed the 'killer app' that would make linux (or any other *nix) a desktop necessity.

When that day comes, though, M$ will quickly change their tune about how evil the open source world is...

Hi,

Hard to view this poll, for what it can tell you. By the time I voted it was 33,33,33,0 - in order of selection.

there are so many ways to read "support." support - in your job, support - you tell your friends about it, support - you run it at home.

I run a home/office network config:

a tri-boot Win98/XP-pro/SuSE7.3Pro
A dual monitor win98 box
5 various boxes of SuSE linux 7.3pro, 1runs all the time, the other 4 are going to be clustered when I can figure that out.

They all do different stuff, and I like to do different things on each of the three running. Which one do I like the best? well, I like the applications that let me do stuff I need to do, more than the opperating systems. In the 3 yrs I've been running SuSE it has only gotten better in terms of the number of applications that can simplify tasks efficiently, setup has gotten easier, but sellection is still lacking. XP-pro has been real nice, it is a lot more fun than 2000, but I feel sorry for all those out there that have gotten stuck with XP-home ( the castrated piece of sham is as bad as ME, in that is only released to take your money for it and the eventual upgrade from it.) 98, well it is tried and true, simple, runs all that I need to run, I just reboot every other day.

More so than any of these OS's the thing that I like the most is my Linksys Router. I was an early adopter, got it the first month it came out, and the firmware upgrades for it have gotten more versital. As far as security for any of the OS's this Router is indespensable in addition to any firewalling software as I am on a persistant cable connection.
