I'm now trying to tackle the SSL issue. I think I've got my configure.php files correct, but when I try to upload them, I get "553 Can't open that file: Permission denied" Any help on how to get around this?

If you protected your configure.php files as recommended, you will have to delete the old file first and then upload a new one (and then protect it again.)
I have a Protection of Configuration (http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2137) contribution that makes it easy to turn the protection on and off.

Thanks Steve - that was exactly it!
However...
I'm afraid I missed a step somewhere... I followed others in my set-up of the two configure files but when I upload them, I get a file not found error on the "secure" pages. The message is something like "Couldn't find file https://goldenapplelscom.secure.powweb.com/admin on the server"
I'm assuming I missed a step, and that I might need to move files into a different directory(?).
Disregard the following - Installing the above tool panel solved it!
Also - having changed my permissions to let me copy files, it won't let me change them back to read only. I change it, chmod it, and it pops right back to rw.
Thanks
John
