I received an email about a month ago stating that a site I master won a best website award. Problem is my ISP lost the email before I could download it (I viewed it online before downloading to my machine; I screen all emails thus. A server error deleted several emails before I had a chance to download them & this was one of them!) and now I need to find out who it was that gave the award... was it Powweb?

PS: I've even tried Googling & other search engines to no avail

It wasn't us. :)

Most of these site awards are thinly disguised attempts to get you to link back to the site that gave you the "award". I've seen too many of them to count.

Back in the dusty olden days there actually were valid "awards" - sites I worked on received them from Magellan, Alta Vista and the Los Angeles Times. Of course, back then the web was a manageable couple hundred thousand sites. I'm not sure how you could quantify comparative excellence in any given genre these days...it would be like trying to elect one plankton king of the sea.

That's funny, and dead-on. Yeah, it always cracks me up to see people list "top award" icons on their sites. They're almost always worthless.

Well, even today, there are valid awards, issued by well-established organizations. But they're rare and if you get one you'd know who it was. I run a cat shelter site, and I keep getting these "Fluffy's Favorite", etc. so-called awards that are nothing more than attempts for link exchanges.
