View Full Version : problems reliably resolving host name (3 ISPs used)

No changes have been made to my domain's WHOIS record or any of the records messed with.

I have shomizu9.us - been having problems for about 48 hours now with pulling the site reliably. Registrar is GoDaddy...who's site is down for "maintenance" right now...but my name servers are still set to:

Name Server: NS3.POWWEB.COM
Name Server: NS2.POWWEB.COM

My site is currently hosted on cluster03, ftp to ftp02.

Here are some nslookup attempts using 3 different ISPs (SBC, Cox, Arkansas.Net):

SBC

I can't seem to explain this. It's like it resolves some of the time on Cox, but not at all on the other 2 (although SBC was doing similar jumping around 24 hours ago). I flushed dns cache before each test. Again, to my knowledge no host record or name server change has been performed. Nothing has been changed with regards to the content of my hosting either (no .htaccess file doing anything crazy for example).

Also, it's been quite humorous sometimes - using Cox, I'll pull my domain (as http://shomizu9.us/) and get other random peoples' hosted sites (I presume my compatriots of cluster03 lol). For example, I once pulled the usage stats page listed as belonging to "superstechnicalassociation.org". Madness. Hopefully this description of behaviour will give a clue as to what is going on.

I can ftp to ftp02.powweb.com just fine. The temporary url for my site works as well.

Any ideas on this? I would be curious if anyone who uses other ISPs than the ones I listed above has issues getting to the site.

Thanks

I cannot connect to your site right now... I have to say that might website has been experiencing the same issues.

http://ordorica.org

sometimes it resolves just fine, and other times I get a error as if the site does not exists. However, I can always reach my site using powweb's temporary addresses in the control panel.

Hmm. Maybe it's a regional issue? I'm in Southern CA. If not then I think I need to have a talk with powweb.

Also, my site has been exhibiting the dns issues for about 1 week now.

EDIT: for example, at this moment I cannot connect to my site using http://ordorica.org or http://www.ordorica.org

but I can connect using http://ordorica.temp.powweb.com/

i'm glad it's confirmed by somebody else. I have not changed my dns settings at all since powweb initially set them up for me.

Recently i did have to pay my yearly fee for my domain name. could something have happend by extending my domain name?

EDIT: talked to a powweb chat memember and he/she said that they would refresh my zone file. Hopefully the problem gets fixed.

It may not be related, however GoDaddy is having issues. I have two domains in "Pending Update Delayed" status. Their tech support said they were having server problems, also tried to tell me forwarding had a propagation time of 24 hours. Outsourcing at its finest.

rcordorica,

shomizu9.us is loading the Powweb default index.php for me, so I've refreshed the HTTP for it - it should start resolving properly within 1 to 5 hours (or less)

Did you get the impression you weren't speaking to someone in the U.S. at GoDaddy? Their support has always been pretty good...

Why do you say, "Outsourcing at its finest"? Did you get the impression you weren't speaking to someone in the U.S. at GoDaddy? Their support has always been pretty good...

I registered 3 domains with them and will transfer them out soon. For some reason everytime I tried changing nameservers it would fail. I would get the confirmation email (everything looked correct), and then later an error message email:

"The modifications you requested for the domain nnnnn.nn have FAILED.
Error: RegCCTLDSvc: ModifyRegistration request failure"

Up to that point it was clear I was dealing with GoDaddy. I called their support number, explained the problem (the csr was always courteous) and was asked to email the confirmation message and the error message to the csr. He received the emails in real-time and said he would escalate the problem.

From that point on it went downhill and it was clear I was dealing with a different organization, I first got generic instructions from support@supportwebsite.com on how to change name servers (back to square one). They never escalated anything. I was then asked to provide the domain name and error message, same thing I emailed to the csr three days ago. Then they tell me the name servers look good and email me generic instructions on how to change name servers (back to square one).

[there's more, and I did partially resolve the problem, however not 100%]

Like I said, Outsourcing at its finest. GoDaddy may be cheap, but pray you never have a problem.

my site seems to be working now. Whatever the admin did with a "zone file" it seems to have fixed my site.

my site was registered through tucows (opensrs) by powweb.

Hi (jj), thanks for the attention. :)

However, at this time, I am still pulling the Powweb placeholder index.php as well, using 2 different ISPs (Cox and SBC). Any ideas on this? Perhaps a local zone/routing issue with my site and cluster03?

On the GoDaddy topic, I've been very pleased with their service, never had a problem...but thus, never had to deal with their tech support. ;)

opening an official ticket. thought I'd pursue this through unofficial means to see if anyone else was experiencing the problem first, but it's been several days since my site has operated properly.

thanks for the input all

I'm guessing that you uploaded your web content to the wrong place, and you're getting the placeholder file PowWeb put in htdocs.

If only it were that easy stevel :)

The index.php file that exists in my htdocs folder for my site on ftp02.powweb.com is one I wrote (I've tried removing it and leaving no index.* file at all to see if I would get a site listing or something, but no luck)

Ah well. We'll see what the support folks come up with I guess.
