I am on mail01 and I am getting an error after logging into squirrelmail.

ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.

This just started. I also have had a few complaints from clients that I did not reply to emails. I never received the emails, so I could not reply to them. Anyone else notice problems?

Karl thinks it is related to the browser, but it occurs in Internet Explorer AND Firefox.

Karl has confirmed a problem that there is a problem on mail01. Stay tuned....

I'm on mail02, it's all IMAP time outs for me on my webmail. I can't stand it. It's totally ruined my day. I can't access or send e-mail. Total BS, powweb.

I briefly logged into webmail but I could not reply to an email. Now I am logged into squirrelmail and see an error.

I get this:

PowWeb Inc Logo
SquirrelMail version 1.4.5
By the SquirrelMail Project Team
ERROR
Error connecting to IMAP server: mail.tlib.org.

Powweb says they are working on problems on Mail 01, 02, & 03. It's total bullsh*t. All day long, it's been crapping out. And it usually happens to be at least twice daily.

if my business is dependent on my email and my email is going down on a regular basis, how the hell am i supposed to run my business. that's 4 times since i started up in early august that email has been down.

Powweb is erasing some of my posts... maybe because I'm laying down the fact. They have major problems right now, and can't face them.

I love you powweb, but you got to fix my webmail!!!!

Good point treebeard, my POP is down as well as my webmail... I haven't been able to get an email in about 5 hours. I know I should probably relax. But I really needed to write/e-mail this afternoon from my account. This really put a "dent" in my day.

does anyone know where those emails are? i wrote a couple from different email servers, such as hotmail, to see if i would get a bounce back or something, but nothing. it's as if the email went through. every once in a while i can log on to webmail and nothing is there. so if it wasn't returned and it isn't on webmail, will i see them later?
i was supposed to get a contract and some radio advertising quotes today, as well as my final brochure layout. do i need to go back to all of these people and say, hey, i don't know if you sent me anything, but my system sucks, so send it to me again, please.

so where are the emails?

YvetteKuhns
9-14-05, 05:27 PM
There have been many problems with webmail and squirrelmail, especially for mail01. I have several client websites and my own hosted here. My email at mail01 has the most problems. Hope it gets fixed and works smoothly like it did years ago.

The last few months are crazy and I shouldn't have to use my personal email account (which is TOO SMALL) to handle my business email AND my personal email. My email has been down so much that I am considering posting my personal email on my website!

All mail servers are working normally again. Any email received on the server will be transmitted, although there will be a slight delay in their arrival to your mailboxes.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage.

I am on mail01 and I am getting an error after logging into squirrelmail.

ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.

I'm also on mail01 and I started getting this same message today. (Have not seen this error until today.) Using my own installation of squirrelmail and have verified that my $imapServerAddress setting in config is correct.

Can log in OK to powweb's Squirrelmail, but I have my own so I can use my preferred plugins.

Same here, mail09 it seems, worked fine until, I believe, yesterday, and since then I'm getting a lot of "Connection dropped by IMAP server". Not aware of any changes I could've made to cause that. webmail.domain.com login and outlook works perfectly fine, just my local squirrelmail installation isn't able to log in and keep the connection any more. What's up here  What's different with the webmail.domain.com installation? Just the server speedier? Would be nice to have a look into the "official" config.php, to see whether there's anything that should be tweaked.

Alternatively you could set up your own DNS entry to point pop to mail.domain.com. (notice the end period) - it should work once it's propagated.

tobi
10-12-05, 04:28 PM
Thanks IanS, but that's not the problem. It's configured to connect to mail.domain.TLD, and it worked fine 'till yesterday. If I change it to pop.domain.TLD or imap.domain.TLD, it gives the "connection refused" error reported by jaxjay. "Connection dropped", in my understanding, means that there's some communication going on between my squirrelmail installation and the imap server. I think it's either about performance, with my frontend webmail server being too slow to keep the connection alive even for the login to fully succeed, or it's somewhere in the other configuration details. Which is why it would be cool to have a look into the official config.php used by the webmail squirrel frontend.

I have the same problem... " ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server."
This is the 2nd time this week that I've run into this problem. The first time was Monday night (the 10th). I sent in a support ticket but never got a response. By morning of the next day, it was working so I closed the ticket. I am now having the same problem. I have tripple checked my config file and am going to mail.mydomain.com. Only thing that I can think of is that the IMAP server is getting too many connections from a specific ip address (ip address of web cluster) and is dropping the connections. Just a theory, probably isn't right. Email still works fine from both Powweb provided webmail and email clients (thunderbird).
Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem now for 2 days! The only way I can get past "ERROR: Connection dropped by imap-server." is to use Powweb's SquirrelMail. What changed in the past 2 days that won't allow me access to my webmail account? I already changed pop.mydomain.com to mail.mydomain.com. Reqular email through Outlook and pop server settings is fine, problem is with Webmail.

There are definitely a number of "different" problems going on, as on Mail 03, it appears that one cannot POP mail from the server, or at least a number of folks here have reported this including myself, but Squirrelmail/webmail is working fine.

Have had no response so far from my support ticket, and it seems that only a couple of us are reporting this Mail 03 problem. I have determined that it's not just Thunderbird here, as Pegasus Mail also cannot connect. Outgoing mail/smtp is working fine with the same password and login.

I use mail05 & mail02 with the same "ERROR: Connection dropped by imap-server." problem. Webmail can only be picked up if I use Powweb's SquirrelMail. What settings are they using that are different? I'd like to see their config.php file.

Just for the record: I'm counting 8 individual users reporting the "connection dropped by imap server" error today in this forum. I've been thinking it might have to do something with client side handling of cookies, or perhaps some background firewall or anti-virus update that's blocking something it didn't block yesterday, but now, I'm on my Linux partition (i.e., not much in terms of packet sniffing) and still getting the same error. Also, yesterday night and until around noon today (Eastern), I could initially log in but would be disconnected at the next refresh. There was a certain chance to not get the error, in other words. Now, I'm completely locked out. My installation can connect to other IMAP email addresses of mine, just not to mail.mydomain.tld on Powweb.

Would be cool to have some knowledgable staff taking the lead, helping us figuring out what our setups have in common if that is where the problem is. As it is now, it's not acceptable. My users don't speak English, and sending them through the Powweb Squirrelmail, which is only partially translated, is not an option. Fortunately, I don't have many users yet  but with the service being as intermittent as it has been over the last two weeks for me, I doubt I'll ever have any.:( People get discouraged easily.

Tobias

Ps: ltodd, your config.php looks pretty much like mine, only that I'd read somewhere that "uw" was the correct server type and adapted some of the folder handling stuff accordingly. Plus, on my cluster, the SMTP port is something non-standard. Check it out in your ops or welcome email. But it seems both shouldn't make too much of a difference when logging on to the IMAP server.

ltodd
10-12-05, 08:08 PM
Also I am on mail05, and I don't think its a cluster issue. I wish I could also see POW's config file or have it as a instant install that is supported.

Good research but we got to ask why this problem happens with personally installed Webmailers like SquirrelMail and not with Powweb's installed version. Since the Powweb installed SquirrelMail works fine the problem must be a setting in our config.php (in the case of SquirrelMail).

I want to be clear that my squirrelmail installation is on my powweb hosted site, and not on any other webserver. It has worked previously, and I have not changed any settings. Pedantic, I know, but I don't want anybody thinking we are all having problems with non-powweb servers contacting powweb's mail servers.

10-12-05, 08:56 PM
Re Craig's post:

...unless it's something performance related, just as the connection between our http servers and our imap servers being too slow for the imap server to keep the session alive. Or something like that. Or perhaps the imap server not liking the kind of traffic that's coming from our http servers and shutting them off... I have another issue today: I don't seem to be getting access log files in my root/logs directory. Don't think I've inadvertently changed anything. What about you guys?

10-12-05, 08:58 PM
I did a bit of troubleshooting/research. I copied everything from my powweb squirelmail insallation (including config file) to the webserver that I run at work. I then was able to access my webmail through squirelmail with out any problems. This leads me to be even more certain of my original theory that it is a problem with where the webmail installation is located and coming from. I think the imap server is blocking requests from the powweb web clusters. Could be due to too many requestions from one ip address in too little of a time. Who knows. All I know is that it isn't my config file, since my config file works when running on a non-powweb web server. Hope this helps.

SquirrelMail is installed on powweb servers for each of our clients, mostly to give Asian language support. We have been using SquirrelMail for over a year with no problem until we were told to change pop.yourdomain.com to mail.yourdomain.com. Now we have the "ERROR: Connection dropped by imap-server." issue.

There are personally installed SquirrelMail like the above and the one Powweb has recently setup. Powweb version is found at http://webmail.yourdomain.com/squirrelmail/. The Powweb version works just fine but it is not what our clients want since we cannot customize it with logos or languages and it does not seem to have SSL support.

So my question is what setting in Powweb's version is different. I do not think it is a slow imap server since the Powweb version works like a charm.

Phil's point makes sense, I've something IlohaMail based also on my PowWeb space, and it doesn't connect either. Used to work fine as well. So, if neither a previously working IlohaMail installation nor a previously working SquirrelMail installation can connect, then it's probably not -- or not only, or not primarily -- the SquirrelMail config.php, I would assume.

I called last night, and was told that they were not aware of the problem, and that they would look into it. Well, I am still not seeing anything posted as of yet, and my ticket is still open. Also, does this count against them claiming 99% uptime.

Only today did I find out about the email problems that I seem to have had - it was quite a shock, but it explained why my sales of lately have been going so below-average..

I quite depend on my autoresponder (the one that B&T made (?) if I remember correctly, which I installed with my cron thing), which has been working perfectly for more than half a year - until octobre 3. Since then it hasn't been able to connect to my mail server anymore (which has always been mail.sygmoral.com) and therefore could also not send the very required replies with more information about what I'm selling... it means a loss of between $200-$500. But anyway, what's done is done - I just want to get it fixed now, because it's still not working!

Anyone have an idea? Someone else using that autoresponder and having similar problems (but got it solved)?.. it quite simply can't connect, using the same connection settings that always worked... simply using imap_open("{mail.sygmoral.com:143}INBOX", [login], [pass])

(I tried replacing mail.sygmoral.com with mail02.powweb.com, or even pop.sygmoral.com, but to no avail)

[[ I assume it's quite simply the same problem everyone else is having ]]

... I can now also confirm that it DOES work when using the exact same code from a webserver that is not powweb (or at least not my cluster, not sure which one that is, used to be www04).

Fascinating :/ I guess I could put my autoresponder script on my other server as a temporary solution........

So first off, should it be {main/mail/pop}.mydomain.com ?

Second, has anyone heard from Powweb?

I guess 99% uptime doesn't apply to all funtionality. I question that anyway. I would like to see an audit of powweb to see what the uptime percent really is.

I also have had squirrelmail problems for the past few days. I just tried installing the latest from squirrelmail.org in case my existing installation was too old to work anymore but even the latest squirrelmail build does not work.

My first support ticket response was that Powweb does not support our own installations of squirrelmail. I sent a second tech support request citing this thread and noting that Powweb clearly changed something on their servers over the past few days since they had to issue the cname announcement.

http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=57590

I asked tech support for what changed on the servers and if they could share the config file for their own squirrelmail since theirs seems to be working fine.

I'll return results when I hear from tech support.

My first support ticket response was that Powweb does not support our own installations of squirrelmail.

Then maybe they'd better remove their Knowledgebase articles about how to do our own installs of Squirrelmail. Wouldn't want to have anything that smacks of "support" for this product I guess.

http://kb.powweb.com/questions/354/Installing-Squirrelmail
http://kb.powweb.com/questions/355/Installing-Squirrelmail-Plugins

I understand that Powweb support personnel can't be expected to assist with scripts generally, but this apparently goes beyond just Squirrelmail, as cron directives to imap servers have been malfunctioning, too (message 54 (http://forum.powweb.com/showpost.php?p=338533&postcount=54)).

Is anyone else having this problem?

I'm on mail01, and I haven't been able to connect to my e-mail for over 24 hours now.

When I put in a ticket for support, the only response I got was yesterday:
"I have an account on mail01 and it's working fine. What exact errors are you getting?"

The only error message I've gotten has that the connection has failed...

Outlook Express - "The connection to the server has failed."
Mozilla - "The connection was refused."
Mailwasher - "Connection was refused."
Yahoo - "[mail server] unexpectedly terminated the connection"

I know I didn't change anything in any of those e-mail devices.
And if there's nothing wrong with the mail server, what could possibly be the problem?

10-13-05, 01:30 PM
Bump. I think it's time for some moderator to bring this to the attention of technical staff, or I don't know. In any case, if there're that many of us only on this thread, and then there're probably a couple who are not posting here or what know I, then they would better make sure they "go any further on troubleshooting this". As it stands, I'm still getting the same error "Connection dropped by IMAP server" on a customized install of SquirrelMail which is inside my PowWeb webspace, referenced to mail.mydomain.tld at port 143, which was functionable two days ago and still connects flawlessly to an IMAP server outside of Powweb when configured accordingly. At least 24 hours now.

Our admins are aware of this problem. It's not affecting any one server, script, program, domain, or client in particular and it's not happening 100% of the time. The problem is an internal one that a resolution is being worked towards.

postalbay
10-13-05, 03:21 PM
Hi,

Good to know that the problem is being worked on. Of course, all of us here is expecting a fast resolution, especially those of us that our business rely 99% on the 99% uptime of our email functionality. It has been 3 days and counting, since Squirrelmail-installations (like ours) have not been able to connect. 30 days in a month, and 3 days is 10%. Even if counting 365 days a year, 3.65 days would be 1%. Today is the 4th day.

We really hope this problem can be resolved at the end of business day, today on 10-13-2005. Otherwise, it would be a big disappointment in Powweb's ability to maintain good support and advertisement practices.

Are you trying to connect via pop.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com or mail01.powweb.com?

The first one should be working, but others have reported problems. The third method worked in the past but isn't the recommended route.

Check that it is looking at mail.yourdomain.com - even if you've not changed it.

Yes, it's mail.domain.com not the others.
Naturally I researched the point here on the forum before ever submitting a ticket on the matter.

Then maybe they'd better remove their Knowledgebase articles about how to do our own installs of Squirrelmail. Wouldn't want to have anything that smacks of "support" for this product I guess..The KB does not only contain čowweb company information, but also user submissions. Even when offering a easy Instant Installer option in OPS now, that does not mean that PW will hold hands on getting the stuff up and running.

It's 10/14 8:45am in Japan and the problem seems to be fixed. Powweb support did reply to my ticket but I'm not sure they could find the problem and I wonder if they can prevent the problem from reoccurring.

Our admins are aware of this problem. It's not affecting any one server, script, program, domain, or client in particular and it's not happening 100% of the time. The problem is an internal one that a resolution is being worked towards.

Tom, what was the problem?

Apparently there was some internal DNS issues that caused the dropped connections. We sincerely apologize about the inconvenience.

Any comment from Powweb about the 99.9% uptime they are advertising? I know this isn't the first time I have had email issues this year. They are WAY over 1%. I think at the very least a public acknowledgment of less than 99% uptime is required. As well as a renewed commitment to try to reach the SLA of 99%. I wish I knew this stuff before I committed to host here. Email is the most important part for me. The URL is secondary.

I had 2 friends take a look at the bounce messages.

One said that it was a DNS issue because my IP for my mail.mydomain.com was not the same as mail01.powweb.com
His IP for mail08.powweb.com was the same as for his mail.hisdomain.com

The other friend called it an internal smtp misconfiguration on the mail server.

This seems to be in line with what was said on the other thread that I think is about the same issue:

I also am on mail01, and everything still seems to be working fine for me (from my powweb web cluster; squirrelmail and a couple other scripts). I can't check anything other connection because I'm behind a firewall here at work blocking all the fun ports.

I am mail05 and I also am currently working just fine. Have you done the suggested pop.yourdomain to mail.yourdomain?

I only had the message appear briefly, then email worked fine in Squirrelmail. It is an intermittant problem and it often occurs when I try to reply to email. Or if I try to send or reply to email when an incoming email is sent.

i am still getting this error. i have important business related emails on my squirrel mail account that need to be replied to. in other words, THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED. The regularity of problems i've encountered with your hosting is getting to be way too common

thanks...

See sticky in PHP forum - it's a bug in new PHP 4.4.1 release that affects a few software packages (incl SquirrelMail). Admins have been advised.
