View Full Version : Access Logs Keep Crashing

I've been at Powweb now for over a month and for some reason, my access logs seem to crash. It's happened four times now, usually in the middle of the night, the logs will stop recording data.
I've been hounding the people at support to look into it, but i never get any response other than the usual "we'll look into it." They get the logs running again, but will have no answer to why they crashed in the first place.
Anyone else have this problem? Could there be anything on my site that could conceivably cause the logs to crash?
Thanks.

What do you mean by 'logs crash' ? Do you mean they are incomplete or that they contain bad data ?
Incomplete data hasn't been reported anymore in the last few months (to my knowledge). I believe it has been a case of buffer overflow in the server when this happened (server confi problem, log writer problem).
Bad data has been sporadically reported. I have seen it at the day cutover, some partially written log records that then get appended to some other record, in the user agent field.

When I say "crash", I mean the logs do not record any data.
No information. Blank. Nothing.
I'm seeing the same thing in my log files, I've been with powweb for almost 2 months and this has probably happened about 6 times already. It's highly annoying.
THe past 2 day's stats are incomplete in awstats and webstats, they only show a fraction of what traffic should have been for that particular day. Is that a problem powweb is having with access logs, or both of my stat apps (webstats & awstats) magically stopped working same day?
Please Help

I've given up with the powweb stats and started using statcounter.com for my analysis. It's a pain to have to do this but I really want accurate data and it seems powweb just can't deliver it.

One of my sites (one that normally has traffic all the time) has a 35 hour gap in the logs from [21/Sep/2005:01:18:01 -0700] to [22/Sep/2005:16:39:32 -0700].
I always check this forum first when I notice this and sure enough, there is a thread with other users complaining of the same problem.

If your raw log or PowWeb supplied stats are not updating, please file a ticket (if you haven't done so).
In the Outages section it was said that the whole cluster04 was having log problems. Do we still need to file a ticket for each individual cluster04 site?

Vladas
I'm not sure if entire cluster04 is affected.
There should be more people posting about it, if it was the case....
If you want it back as soon as possible, please go ahead and file a ticket.
If not, please wait a day or two to see what happens.

I have switched to statcounter.com too. Even if it is just for a back up and to compare details from both logs. All information helps :)
Of course, with the regularity with which Powweb mucks up logs, it's difficult NOT to rely on a third party embedded counter. I see from one of your other threads that you're actually losing money because of this. I'm luckier, I just lose amusement value.
