I would read a few articles (or google) about FireWorks. I've never used it, but I'm sure it can do what you want with alittle time.

For photoshop, do a few googles on 'photohop remove background'...there are tons of tutorials out there that have nice pics to go along with it.

Here is one: http://graphicssoft.about.com/library/weekly/aa000607b.htm

I found out how to do it but it takes a long, long time. Do you know of any quicker ways?

you can probably use the magic wand to get rid of the wood. really, though, it should just take a couple minutes with the eraser tool, zoomed in, of course. That picture doesn't have a one-step fix, but it's pretty straightforward.

In Photoshop I usually paint a white line with a soft edged brush around the subject then increase the brush size and hardness to paint the rest out. Took about 20 mins here's the result. http://streetsie.com/images/ps25-xf.jpg Let us know if you want a drop shaddow or anything.

I paint PS2 for people. By the way is it hard to take out all the background stuff in photoshop? Because in fireworks it took for ever and didn't look very good when I did it!

They are all quite similar. It takes practice and experience to master any program.

Also can you do this stuff in Imageready?

ImageReady is just a component of Photoshop they have the same tools and options. Most jump into ImageReady for complex tasks like make or edit gif annimations, make mouse over buttons, produce html pages etc.

Hey, does anyone have any info on advantage / disadvantage of using a lot of slices vs minimal slices (eg, full page design header to footer, 9 slices vs 30 slices?)

I just did a design that is pretty intricate and after slicing top to bottom realized I made 30 slices.. Will this affect loading time or any other relevant user issue that would be worth going back and trying to alter the design to be more like a normal simpler page design, like around 9 (3 in the header, 3 in the footer, 3 in the body stretching vertically)?

Im seems like it should load just as fast, if not faster since the colors in smaller jpegs are from a tighter spectrum for the compression especially for selective palette.. and if browsers can load multiple jpegs at a time speed up the download time by having multiple jpegs loading simultaneously.. or is this just a crapload of pictures and im off on my diagnoses??

thanks
