View Full Version : Multiple Domains/IP's on One Account
hey,
I've seen a lot of threads mention having multiple domains on one account, but I was checking to see if it was possible to have a seperate IP? I know my account is already on a shared IP, but woudl I be able to make other domains go on other shared IP's?
I want to link my sites together, but by having different IP's the links will be viewed as proper links by search engines.
Thanks.
PS. This is a bit nonrelavent, but I'd like to know anyway. Powweb has shared IP's? I know what that is and I understand what a dedicated server would be, but what is a virtual private server (VPS)?
I don't know why you think you need separate IPs for search engines. They don't care. You can buy another package and maybe you'll be assigned to a different cluster, but you have no control over that and I don't see the point.
A Virtual Private Server appears to be an independent system for each site, with its own IP, but is actually sharing a physical system.

google, msn, yahoo, all big search engines 'se' will read only your HOST domain IP, your second domain runs on the same IP and search engines will not index it for months to come, even if you have a company submit your site, wont happen right away.
I have the same setup and my HOST domain is the only one that gotten listed, the other domains sharing same IP, took several months for 'se' to index them. If you want a good PR you have to get a dedicated IP address; PW has no info on getting additional IP; unless you signup for a new account.
Your other options, same im looking at right now - new host that offers 2 IP's, on account that allow several domain hosting; some also offer you an additional dedicated IP for $2 a mo.
I've never seen any evidence that this is true. I've got good PR for my sites on PowWeb's servers. What it takes is quality content and incoming links.

Its isn't about anothe site on the same IP taking months to index (I can get any site indexed in a few days). Being on the same IP means to SE's that you may be the same owner so interlinking your sites isn't as valuable.
Go to any professional SEO and he'll tell you teh same thing because I'm getting my information from Search Engine Optimization Forums and Blogs.

That would mean that no site on any shared hosting provider would ever get listed ...

I don’t have proof beside what my experience; this is what the issue was for me; maybe I did something wrong in my domain setups, or previous comment were incorrect and you could correct me;
www.domain1.com
The main domain with the IP
www.domain2.com
2nd domain on same IP
Domain 2 “data” is stored in a folder called
X (with an index.html in it) this folder is under www.domain1.com IP
Domain 2 DATA can be viewed under www.domain1.com/x/index.html and www.domain2.com/index.html
Search engines would not link the data of www.domain2.com because its already finding it under www.domain1.com since it’s the same IP.

Search engines would not link the data of www.domain2.com because its already finding it under www.domain1.com since it’s the same IP.Starting with your last statement, this is most likely false. For one the search engine has no way to determine from start that domain2 is stored within the filesystem of domain1, nor that it starts as a subweb with URI /x/... Search engine spiders can only follow the URLs they see, they have no way of browsing the filesystem index to stumble over a subdirectory /x/. If domain1 itself has no webpages that link to domain2's pages, no spider will find it that way. If you are concerned that a user may know about the domain1 url to domain2's website, then add an extra rewrite rule to deny the access to that path with a 404/403 error message.
I don't deny the fact that search engines are trying to fight abuse. I just don't believe they will go after websites with low rank. As for shared IP numbers, there must be hundreds if not thousands of providers that are using this approach for servicing their customers. Powweb hosts up to 10'000 websites on one cluster. While not all have themselves indexed, it will leave several thousands that a search enging provider would have to check and match for some identical content.

I said if two sites on the same shared hosting IP address link to each other it isn't as valuable. Not all people on one IP address only link to each other.
