I'm still lost after all my trial and errors along with reading the emanual that came with my photoshop. Could anyone be able to give me a detailed step by step procedure as to how to place an image onto a layer?
(pardon my spelling mistakes, long day of classes, meetings, and homework)

um anyone know?
without having PS here, i could be wrong... so take that into consideration.
open the image you want to add. select the area of image you want to paste into a new layer (or select the whole image) and copy it. now you can paste into new layer.

In case it is any help, there are stacks of excellent blow-by-blow PS tutorials on the internet - just put 'free Photoshop tutorials layer image' in Google and you're off... or for a really cool search, try inquisitorx.com (I haven't put that particular set of search terms into the latter so can't say what you will get there, but Google chucks up stacks of useful stuff, as always!)

Everybody uses copy & paste. Why can't you copy & paste? We need details to help you. If you have a whole bunch of images try recording actions. Then batch process them.

Having no idea what you are trying to accomplish, it is pretty hard to give you any advice. If you are just trying to add something to an existing image you can just drag the source layer onto your destination image. If you want it centered all you have to do is hold down the shift button while doing that.
If the image is too large....Cntrl/T will activate the Transform tool and you can scale the new layer. To keep things in perspective hold down the Shift button while sizing.

To answer your question. Yes, you can import some images without using cut and paste.
Under File use "Place", this only works for importing .eps images. Being the case the answer probably does not help you as very few web designers are familiar with vectored images.
Your stuck with cut and paste. What specifically is the result of your cut/paste that you're not happy with? Maybe we can offer a specific help.
