The load balancing is effective if a single (or even multiple) web server becomes inoperable, as the remaining servers in the cluster will still work and your page will still be accessible.
It wasnt the web server that was directly affected, but our networked file system. It became overloaded by the abusive users attempting to load such a large number of files, so that any other users that were also trying to access their files on the file system were presented with slow load times.
