My school has an intranet setup. My question is - How does an intranet work? Is it located on a server here at school? The URL is http://intranet/ which I know none of you can access.
It just sparks my curiousity as to how it works...

If its like an internal website...then there is most likely a webserver somewhere on the local network. They just have to point the requests to that system using a kind of DNS manager...or you just name the computer 'intranet'.
Its probably running windows and IIS...unless its a cool school with *nix.

Cool! Thanks, BerksWebGuy!
The 'Intranet' may also be a school district wide version of the same thing. Here we have two intranets, one local to the school and one local to the district. Neither can be reached from the outside world.
