A teacher in my building has a Mac. When it boots, it asks for a diskette. I insert the Utilities diskette and it boots fine. When I click on the apple symbol, there should be a long drop-down menu, but all I see is About Macintosh....

The user has installed Paint Shop Pro (old version) on this machine. Can anyone tell me where to find it?

What kind of Mac is it?
Have a look here http://www.apple-history.com/ and try and find the model and post back here. Also what Operating System is it using; Classic OS (will be called OS and then a number up to 9) or OSX ?

It isn't normal for a Mac to ask for a diskette (is it a diskette or cd by the way?) in order to boot, it's often a sign that the Mac has forgotten whick disk or volume it's supposed to boot from, but can also be a sign that the hard disk has become damaged or corrupted.

Edit...
Finding anything in Mac OS is usually quite easy. Within the Finder (This is always running in Mac OS) hold down the apple key on the keyboard, and press the letter f.
An app called Sherlock should start, just type Paint and click on the magnifying glass or find button. Sherlock will look slightly different depending on what version of Mac OS they are running, but basically it's similar to this http://www.macgeeks.com/specials/sonata/img/sherlock2.gif

It is a Macintosh Performa. I will try using the apple-f combination and let you know what happens. Thanks!

If the Mac boots to a disk image with a flashing question mark, it means the hard disk has basically crashed or that it can't read from it.

Wow.... is there a reason your co-worker is still using a Performa?

Can the hard disk be reformatted?

The Performa was donated by the co-worker for her special ed students to use to familiarize themselves with the keyboard.
