View Full Version : Possible virus on my server
So recently, a friend of mine said he thinks I have a virus on my server. A little bit ago, I was uploading some files and Norton popped up saying I have a Download.Trojan in my temporary internet files. So I started thinking, maybe I do have one there. Is there a way for me to detect and delete any viruses from my server?
It's very unlikely that you have a virus on the Poweb server. If you were uploading files, sometimes Norton Internet Security (or Personal Firewall) gets confused by the network activity and thinks there's a trojan on your PC. Newer versions don't seem to do this as much.
What do you use to upload files to the web server? FTP FrontPage? Something else?
Ok. Well, Temporary Internet Files is used by MSIE and therefore it would not have anything to do with uploading to your site.
Well, even though he knows absolutely nothing about anything, he still insists I have a worm there. And now he's convincing other people there is too, though I'm pretty sure there's not. I'd still like to know if there's something I could do to confirm whether there is or not.
Compare all the files on your site with your "known good" copies (and make sure they are known good.) What particular "worm" does he think you have?
Or give us the web address (PM a mod if you don't want it public) and they can go through a number of pages and see if their AV program picks up something.
I don't know what specific worm he think's there is. He also says it's not in any certain file that I linked him to, but thinks it resides on the server itself and infects everything. Mainly I link pictures from www.codeinsurrection.com/pics if anybody wanted to check for anything there.
Your friend is just making things up. Ignore him.
Yeah, especially since I swithed everything over to a new server. It's just that he convinces other people there are problems too. Any way I can show him some proof of nothing being there?
You can't prove a negative. If he insists that something is there, tell him to "put up (his evidence) or shut up."
