Hi all, I just bought a computer from one these little stores. Real nice guy. There is a problem with the PC though. I took it back to him and he is not sure whats wrong or how to fix it. Here it goes. When I turn the computer on it pops up a message saying "Select new boot drive or enter proper boot media" Any idea guys? It has windows XP unregistered right now, Athalon 3200, Asus Mother board, 1 gig ram,... If you need any other info let me know please. Thanx

Go into the BIOS setup when starting the system. Look for boot menu or something similiar that you can set the boot sequence (usually 3 1/2, CD, then disk).

what is the current boot order in the BIOS? try putting your hard drive first. if that works, then try putting your CD drive before the hard drive. you said you tried adjusting this, but it sounds like it is looking for a disk that isnt there...

:D It's looking for a disk "Drive" thats not even installed. It wants a floppy drive, and there isn't even one in there. LOL

Windows XP wants you to boot from the cd drive. Windows 98 may have been previously installed or your Asus motherboard may support Windows 98 and keeps going to the default setting to boot from the floppy drive. Are you sure you reset to boot from the cd drive, then saved your changes?
If the motherboard doesn't save your changes, you may need to update the BIOS. You can find the updated BIOS on the motherboard manufacturer's website (Asus). Be sure to select the correct motherboard and operating system. Save your current BIOS, then update it. I have had weird experiences with Asus motherboards. They can be stubborn as they seem to prefer default settings.
