Via inability to access a site that requires 128 bit encryption and browser test at several sites, I find that IE has only 56 bit SSL key size. Help/About IE tells me it has 128 bit cipher strength. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE6 to no avail. I have also tried Repair on Add/Remove programs. My OS is Windows 2000 Professional. Any suggestions as to what would kick in the 128 bit encryption? Thanks.

If no one on this forum can offer assistance, you may want to try posting your question here http://www.computing.net/forums/

There are forums there for just about every OS there is.

Are you located in the United States? There use to be restrictions on exporting 128 bit outside the U.S. I remember once Microsoft needing to confirm my IP as within the U.S. before they would let me download a browser with the 128 bit stuff. This may have changed and I might be totally wrong. Just something I thought of when I read your post...

Thanks for the tip, JJ. I'll check the forum out.

Mark, yes I am in California. I've seen references to the foreign 56 bit limit and have wondered if there's some connection. Haven't been able to figure out if there is a clue there. Thanks.

Jack,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I found the solution at the forum you suggested. IE was not the culprit. Windows 2000 encryption update was needed. Although I had run Windows Update, it apparently had not picked this up. For any one else with this problem, http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/default.asp.

Thanks again.
