I'm pretty determined to buy a Photoshop of the latest version when the time is right. With two Mac machines I own (PowerBook G4 and Intel iMac), I really need someone's opinion on what I should do. Here are the dilemmas:

1. I am a student now, but will graduate in two months. (losing the privilege of purchasing the academic version)
2. Photoshop CS2 is not in Universal Binaries, so I am forced to use my inferior PowerBook when my brand new 20 inch iMac is sitting on my desk.

There are also two things I want to confirm to feel comfortable with the purchase, if I decide to do so:

1. I thought $299 price tag for Photoshop CS2 that I saw at my student book store was a fair deal, but some people on the net is telling me that there are schools that sell it for $99. I don't mean to doubt them, but does that sound realistic? As a student, should I be looking around other campuses that sells Photoshop CS2 for less than $299. I've seen Illustrator and other Creative Suite apps going for about $100, but not Photoshop....

2. Has anyone whose living does not rely on using Photoshop used it on the Intel iMac? Is the emulation really that bad, or should an amateur like me not worry about it. If anything, is PowerBook G4 fast enough to handle Photoshop CS2?

I really do think waiting for CS3 that's coded in Universal Binaries is the smartest way to take advantage of Intel iMac that I spent my hard-earned money on,,, but at the same time, I'm an amateur who probably would never utilize all the feature that CS2 has to offer, and plus, right now is the only time I can buy one as a student.

Timing of purchase... CS2 now w/ student discount, but limited to using on PowerBook?
or CS3 a year later, which will be more money than I would probably be willing to spend. Again, I am pretty determined to getting my hands on Photoshop, but my life does not depend on it. Help me decide!! Thanks for ANY input.

buy it now as a student, $299 sounds like a basic price. you can always upgrade to cs3 later, but if you wait the full version will be $600+ you can buy academic versions from ebay too.

as for system reqs, you'll be able to run ps fine, if you're working on big files 40meg+ get some more memory. i was running ps 7 on a 500mhz machine up to just a few months ago and it ran fine, lagged with big graphics, but if you're not a pro you probably won't be working on images that large.

The academic versions of software are not supposed to be used for business use. If someone opens the original PSD, he/she can see what version you used. If you do not plan to use the software for anything more than school work, then save yourself some money.

You really could save more by just not upgrading at all. Or you can buy an old regular version from eBay and upgrade that one later, if it was unregistered. But how can you trust that it wasn't?
