I have a customer who wants to use an exchange server to pull their email off the powweb servers and then redistribute the email internally within their organization. (Someone told them that this would be a great way to "share contacts"). They are using their powweb mail server instead of hosting the mail on their own server and comcast as their outbound SMTP. To date, it' s been nothing but headaches. Emails are not going out. The exchange server stops checking all the boxes. Everything works fine on the powweb end....so the problem must exist in their exchange server.

Is this the right way for them to be using their exchange server with powweb email?

Do they need to use some sort of bridge for exchange in order to get it to work with POP3 and a shared SMTP the way they want it to?

I have limited knowledge about using an exchange server, so I need some advice to pass on to perhaps put them in the right direction. (They are on their 3rd tech company in the last month trying to get this to work)

Couple of questions/suggestions:

1) Check out POPBeamer (http://www.popbeamer.com/products/popbeamer.htm). This basically acts as fetchmail in that it'll poll external email accounts and deliver the messages to the local Exchange mailboxes.

2) I suggest dumping Comcast for SMTP and just use the Exchange box to handle SMTP. It's configured on install to enable SMTP, so you shouldn't have to do anything initially to get that working. Once you verify that is working, I do suggest reading up and making sure it's not available as an open relay.

Hope this helps.

excellent! Thank you for the fast reply. I am going to pass this information along to their so-called-tech-guy.
