just wondering if anybody else has been having this problem.
I've still yet to check my webmail (i'll do so after this post) but i haven't been able to check my mail via my normal email client (MS Outlook Exp) for 2 days now. I thought it was a temp. thing, so i didn't bother, but i am still unable to check it now.
I'm able to send mail (to my knowledge; i get no errors) but am unable to recieve/check my mail.
Can anybody offer advice?
Thanks in advance,
~Marty

Sure! I can offer advice! But it's not going to be nice advice.
I troll these forums looking to help people and jump in now and jump in when I feel I can lend a hand. Recently, however, I decided I was tired of people posting these vague messages where you have to go around with them three or four more messages before you even know what the question is. So I decided if they don't care enough to ask a reasonable question, then I don't care enough to help out. That cut my posts down to, well, pretty much zero.
So my advice to you would be to consider that you're asking other people to take the time to help you, so give them something to work with. You say you can't check your email with Outlook Express. What does that mean? What happens when you try? Does your shower turn on? Do all the lights in your house blink a few times? Does the computer give you a small shock? Does a flock of small birds attack you? WHAT?
I'm guessing you get some sort of error message from Outlook Express when you try to receive email. OE will let you right-click on the error message, select copy, and paste it in here (and even if it didn't have that nice feature, since you're asking people to help you could at least work with them by manually typing in the message).
If you tell us what the error message is (or, if you don't get an error message, tell us what is happening), then maybe we can help you. If you just want to say it doesn't work, then here's some equally vague help: The way to correct the problem you're having is to fix it. You're welcome.

can safely assume that mail configuration (http://help.powweb.com/tutorials/email/win/oe56.php) was done correctly?

i was going to post my errors i recieved after i posted my message, but something else came up and haven't been able to get to these forums until now.
So, to "Mr. Last Straw:"
errors:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: ' A T T (postoffice.worldnet.att.net)', Server: 'postoffice.worldnet.att.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'info@motionblur', Server: 'mail.motionblurracing.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
--------------
The first error is to my primary email (from my ISP), and the second one is from POWWEB's account i have.
I have not modified anything withing the last 3 months or so, so there is no way that i could have mis-configured something (since it was all working for months and stopped on it's own).
Ok, now you might be thinking: on it's own? Computers don't do anything, 'on their own.' Computers only do what someone tells them to do! Blah blah blah.
I have not changed anything. Nobody has access to my computer (due to a bootlock) in order to change anything.
My concern is this though: if i didn't change it, and noone else changed it - could the program have changed? I was infected w/ a Klez variant a month back, and innoculated it ASAP to the best of my ability (with AV Software and also a Klez-cleaner prog from Symantec/some other reputable source). This virus is known for mass-reproduction and also data damage(to programs). This doesn't seem to be 'random' program damage, but more of a centralized 'attack' to the mail-recieve function of MS Outlook Express. So, my question (with proof, not just someone saying 'yeah.') - could this Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E be from the Klez?
~Martin
PS - I would prefer the recommendation of someone who truly knows their stuff, b/c i have no problem with re-formatting my HD and starting fresh if need be.

Mr. Last Straw? Who's that? Since I don't see anyone with that name rushing to answer your post, I'll give it a shot:
It could be a problem with Outlook, but it could be the more general problem of port 110 somehow being blocked for you. To see if it's that, go to a command prompt window and enter this:
telnet mail.motionblurracing.com 110
If it sits there for a long time and then gives you an error like "Could not open a connection to host on port 110 : Connect failed", then port 110 is probably blocked (as it's unlikely to have messed up both Outlook Express and telnet).
If it instead connects and gives you some welcome message like "+OK Cubic Circle's v1.31 1998/05/13 POP3 ready <e78e0000746a373d@mail2.powweb.com>", then it could be a problem with OE. But I suspect it's not a problem with OE.
I did a search on the Net and was not able to find anything about Klez doing this. One guess is that you have antivirus/firewall that has been set up to be a little too aggressive, or perhaps you mistakenly told it to block port 110, or something else. Or maybe not.
If you cannot do the telnet thing, then one thing you could try (preferrably after updating you AV software and doing a full system scan) is temporarily disabling all AV/firewall software and seeing if that helps.

Mr Last Straw was you, Rusbasan. You mentioned that you were tired of people being lazy. Well, first off - the sarcastic comment on my behalf was unnecessary, so i apolgize. And i also apologize for being lazy (as you have gotten tired of). I could have searched around and found a reason for the 'error 5x838.....' withouth having to come to these forums and ask (that's what i've done for a while) but i didn't think of it, because i just figured it would be easier to ask the question and have someone else figure out my problem for me - instead of doing it myself.
I better stop that before it gets worse. :\
But thank you for your reply, and thanks ORich also. I didn't have my AV software running (it wasn't even in my taskmon[or whatever the program/window is that handles the currently running processes]) so i didn't think that was the problem @ first. But i shut down my computer for about 10 sec to flush the memory, and all is well.
It must have been part of the firewall protection in NAV that never shut down properly.
Once again,
Thanks (and sorry for being sarcastic)

Martin,
No need to apologize for your sarcasm. As it turns out, I am a big fan of sarcasm and was in fact being sarcastic myself when pretending to not know who Mr. Last Straw was. :p
I was not criticizing you for being lazy. I do not think there is anything wrong with posting here to ask about an error -- that's what these forums are for. I was criticizing you for not giving us enough information to help you out. If you look at your original post, I think you'll see my point that there's really nothing to go off of there.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear you've figured out the problem and all is well...
