View Full Version : Help. New HDD
I just bought a new SATA drive. It says that its connected in my BIOS, but it doesnt show up when i go to "my computer". What do I do?
I have two IDE's connected if it means anything.
Can you give the make/model of the Motherboard? There may be configuration via jumpers to allow SATA, PATA or a mix.
namebrand - Intel desktop boards.
Model - either D865GBF or D865GLC. I havent discovered a difference between the two. I think its something with the onbaord accessoies (LAN, video, sound)

This may help, I don't know the OS you're using. If it's a later Windoze one then drivers aren't needed.
Windows XP, dawg. Should I update?
You should always have the latests updates installed, but I don't think they'll make any difference in this case.
Have you flashed the BIOS in any way?
Nope. The Harddrive is working fine it says. Its in the device manager and the BIOS. Its just not in "My computer"
GRRRRR
Is it visible in device manager?
Yes. This is my 3rd HDD in my comp. Ill take a screenshot. Gimme a second. Ill put it in an edit.

Try:
Start>>Control panel
Choose 'classic view'
Then:
Admistrative tools >>Computer management>>Storage>>Disk management (local)
Does the drive show up in that display?
Yes, Unallocated.

Great, we're making progress.
The next bit is from memory - I can't reproduce it here.
Right click on the 'unallocated' drive.
The menu should include an option to 'format the drive' As it's a large drive, this process takes a long time.
You get to choose the file system to use - I'd choose NTFS, but it's up to you. You can also choose to have the drive letter different from D: (or E:) which is what it will default to if you wish to keep the same letters for your CD's.
(I've got go now (nearly 10pm), but I think that should be enough to get you going.)

You need to determine wether the hard drive is SATA or SATA II, and which one your motherboard supports, sounds like your trying to get an SATA II drive recognized by SATA motherboard, if thats the case there should be a jumper on the drive.
Lets see if the works, this is a WD SATA drive explaining and showing the jumper on theirs:

for explanation purposes only, you never said who made the drive itself, and only covers certain chipsets, hopefully it may help.
