View Full Version : Corrupted Attachment
On a somewhat regular basis, attachments I send using my powweb account get exchanged with one called win.dat. No one can open this attachment.
If I send the same message to myself, it goes through correctly. If I send the same message using my ISP, it also goes through correctly. If I resend several times, it also sometimes goes through correctly. I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks

Windows dat files should not be opened. It sounds like your attachment isn't always attached. Does this happen when trying to FORWARD an attachment?
Make sure you use HTML or Plain Text format
when sending messages to Outlook Express users, or users of any other
e-mail client besides Outlook. Don't use Rich Text format, which is
proprietary to Outlook and will cause problems for other recipients, one
of which is that they won't get your attachments and will instead get
that winmail.dat file.

How to Configure Outlook NOT to send Winmail.dat attachments:
To Turn off Rich Text sending for messages in Microsoft Outlook
1.Click on Tools
2.Click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
3.In the Send in this Message Format list, select Plain Text, and then click OK.

This doesn't work all the time. I've had problems at work with a user in Outlook sending to a Lotus Notes user with the option set and it still sends out the dreaded winmail.dat

I agree. Some of my clients send that darn file to my email. Even if they change their settings, they may install software and Windows changes their settings back to the default.
