Whenever I try to get into live help it says I am barred....whyis that?

Don't take it personally. Due to the repeated abuse by someone using a BT IP address, PowWeb admins had to block a large set of BT IPs. Each time they lift the block, the abuser comes back, not always on the same IP.

yasmin xxAs someone in exactly the same position, I sympathise.

As for real help, try asking your question in the forum - or sending an e-mail to support@powweb.com by using the system in OPS.

Most questions can be answered in here, for those that can't we'll tell you quickly to contact support.

Thank you again. I have downloaded PHP is seems to be in the htdocs but where do I go from there. What am I doing wrong as I cannot access the forum. Is it because the website isn't live, if so what do I do next.

What exactly did you download? Perhaps PHPbb? Something else? You don't download "PHP" itself. Have you read the installation instructions for whatever forum scripts you are using?

Sorry it was PHPbb......from the site and no the files seem to be in htdocs

I'm going to suggest that you take your question to the Forums and Bulletin Boards (http://forum.powweb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69) section of this forum. Explain in detail what you did so far.

Typically, installing a script package has these steps:

1. Download the package from the developer
2. Unpack it onto your local PC
3. Upload the unpacked files to your site in the folder you want it
4. Open some sort of install page in a browser to complete installation

Thank you Steve..........i will.

I haven't downloaded anything. The activation email came and I logged in that was it. Is that what I have done wrong? I didn't see anywhere there was anything to download.

Ah, I see. When you purchase web hosting from PowWeb, that's all you get initially - hosting. If you want software installed, such as PHPbb, you have to install it yourself. There are a number of software packages which can be installed through Member Operations Site Tools, and perhaps PHPbb is one of them (I haven't looked), but my general advice is to not use these auto-installers and to do it yourself instead.

It's very misleading to be honest.........looks easier than it is. I think I am going to try and ask for a refund.

You can have a refund, less $15 for the domain name. Be aware, you'll be charged a fee by the CC company in England (in most cases) for the conversion from US$ to UK£

I have contacted support.........not that they have been any help to me at all today. I would rather pay someone to do it properly and put up with this lack of support.

Thank you for your time

What is misleading? What did you read that led you to believe that PHPbb would be pre-installed on your site? I don't think you'll find any hosting service that will do that. At a minimum you have to ask for it specifically, which you can do through Member Operations if you must.

However, I'll comment that if you find it too difficult to install a script package, you will probably find it equally difficult to maintain a site using said script package. PowWeb support doesn't help with user-installed scripts.

I don't think you should have to pay anyone. Luckily, PHPbb.com has some great flash tutorials you can use. I would recommend you go to PHPbb.com and click on demo first to see if that is what you are actually trying to install. Also here is the link to all of the demos. Very easy to use! Powweb is no different from other hosting solutions this way..

Yasmin,

Member Operations is the PowWeb control panel. http://ops.powweb.com/ Once logged in, click on Site Tools. You should now be on the Instant Installer page, which has links to various automated installs of script packages, including PHPbb. I have not used that one so I can't tell you what to watch for.

Hi Steve
I know what you mean now. That is what I did and installed the forum that way but don't know what to do next.

Try asking in the PHPforums section - you may have more luck with a specific question or problem rather than 'I don't know what to do next' type.

You now want to read the documentation on PHPbb at www.phpbb.com and learn how to configure the forum to your needs. For more help, see the forum section I linked to earlier.
