View Full Version : Website backup?
Does anyone have any ideas or tips for backing up a website? Essentially what I would like to do is to store my entire htdocs (on the powweb webftp) folder on my computers external hard drive, just in case powweb dies on me.
I have bits and pieces of the site stored on the hard drive, but figuring out what goes where would be practically impossible b/c of how much I update and change things around (the site is growing constantly). I create the website by writing html in notepad and then uploading the .html and .jpgs through powweb's webftp. To me, this seemed to be a pretty quick and dirty way to get a site up.
Can the .htdocs folder from my webftp be copied to a external drive or would I have to download each and every file?
Thanks for any suggestions.

There is a way in Member Operations to download a ZIP of your site, but if you have a local copy of the site and upload changes, you have the backup already, yes? This is the way I do my development.
I download a full site backup, file by file, rather than a zipped version. That way I get a fully operational site at my computer easily. It may take a little longer, but I can set it to go and leave it to download. Alterations are then easy to make, I simply tell the software to upload those files that have changed.
Ok, I think I found out where to download a zipped version of my entire site. I clicked on download and I get this:

Before you can download a zipped copy, you need to create a zipped copy surely.....?
No, I was in the wrong area. I went to site backup. I should have gone to file explorer. From File explorer I could download all or individual files. Now I have the entire site (which is only jpgs and .htmls) on my hard drive.
thanks so much guys!
I too would like to zip a back up so I treid and This is what I get:
Software error:

Could someone guide me on this?

You've found the right method, just you can't zip the entire site into one file (as far as I can see from the error message). Break it down into smaller chunks.
