View Full Version : Move files from laptop to PC
I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that needs the OS reinstalled. I want to remove the hard drive and connect it to my PC's IDE cable and use xcopy to move the files from the laptop HDD to the PC HDD until I get the OS reinstalled on the laptop. I need a cable that will convert between the 2. Is this what I need?

Thanks!
I havent used that, but it does look like what you need.
You do have other options, I believe. What about using a network to transfer the files? If you are on a secure network, you could "share" the folders you need (or even the entire C drive) on the laptop and transfer files that way. If you have gigabytes of info to transfer, this may take a while, but it will likely be quicker than ordering that cable and waiting for it to come in the mail!
You could also buy a USB enclosure for the notebook hard drive...this is more versatile, and doesnt require you to open up your tower - http://www.pcclub.com/product_details.cfm?itemno=A3330026
In this "case", this is even cheaper after rebate! It also provides a high capacity, relatively portable backup and storage solution; you just provide the hard drive!

I would do any of the above. Those enclosures work pretty well and come in handy sometimes. They are nice to make your own external backup drive.
How much space are you talking about moving? Can you burn them to CDs/DVDs (you can even zip them up first)?
Good point Berks; why use a bulldozer when a shovel might work!
If both the machines have a network adapter, why not just use a cross-over cable to link them together? Cost a whole lot less.
isn't a laptop also a pc? inquiring minds want to know.
Although most PCs are considered more along the lines of a desktop or workstation, a laptop could be a personal computer (unless it's owned by the company you work for.)

I decided to use a 512MB jump drive to move the data. Thanks!

Yeah that would be your best bet to move small amounts of data .
