View Full Version : fonts everyone has?
I've added so many fonts to my computers, I haven't a clue what came pre-loaded.
Anyone know of a listing somewhere that shows what fonts are nearly guaranteed to be on Windows machines?
How about a listing (with graphic examples of the fonts) in reference to Mac's?
This sure would be handy when creating style sheets to have better odds of things showing the way I'd like them to..
TIA

Depends on what your preferred style is.
"Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif" is always safe for sans-serif faces.
"Times New Roman, Times, Serif" works the serif look.
"Courier New, Courier, Monospace" for a, uh, monospaced face.
"Verdana, Geneva"
"Century Gothic, Avant Garde"
Here's a list of default Mac fonts:
Chicago
Courier
Geneva
Helvetica
Monaco
New York
Palatino
Times
I think Mac users can also use TrueType fonts, so if it's a freeware font and its license authorizes it, you can offer it for download.
If you're doing a pull-quote, you can always do it as a graphic. Macs display sizes quite a bit differently than PCs. What looks "normal" to a PC user may look microscopic to a Mac user.
If the option exists, see if you can find one of the older 'n cheaper iMacs just to browse -- or there may be some kind of emulator available ...

Just a side note about the Windows fonts for anyone who is going to remove any of their fonts.
Do NOT remove the one called Marlett, if you notice it is included with every Win OS from 98 on up. It is the one that the system uses for the little x's, >'s and such for the GUI's.
I don't know how many calls I've had because someone removed that font and then couldn't figure out why their menus, dialog boxes and windows didn't look the way they were supposed to.
