View Full Version : Doesn't make sense...

I recently had changed my MX records when the problem with AOL mail was going on.

Now that the problem is currently resolved I attempted to set my DNS back to PowWeb defaults by clicking the "Default to PowWeb" button in the DNS Tab of OPS.

That didn't do anything as all the entries remained to the custom ones I have set. I then proceeded to re-enter the defaults manually based on another domain I have and answers I found in the FAQ.

My problem now is that if you view this report: http://dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=turcotte.tv you will see that there are definite problems.

I contacted support through the 'secure' Support Center and got this:

Hello Jason,

Thank you for contacting Support.

In order to set Custom DNS Record for your domains, we need you to verify your username and password for security reasons. If you feel that e-mail is insecure to send your password, you can call our phone support 877-476-9932 for further assistance.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sincerely,

Isn't the fact that I was logged in with my username and password to submit the ticket in the first place enough "security" to authorize the reset?

And the statement of "If you feel that e-mail is insecure to send your password..." is amazing. Aren't we all taught on the first day of "email class" that you NEVER send a password or other sensitive information through email?

I KNOW I could call, but frankly, I've been making far too many phone calls to PowWeb Support lately. It is not my fault that clicking the "Reset to PowWeb" button in OPS does not in fact reset anything.

I'm starting to feel defeated with all these problems. :(

In a word, no. The issue of support asking for your username and password in an email has been mentioned before in the forums, and those of us who discussed it are completely dumbfounded by it. It shows such a blatant disregard for security, it makes you wonder if the person asking has ever been on the Internet before. But since we're only customers, we have no way of changing the policy, either.

As for the DNS Report, don't worry about it. It's nothing that will affect you (except, possibly, the lack of SPF record).

Glue at parent nameservers (WARN) - Not a problem.

Missing (stealth) nameservers (FAIL) and
Missing nameservers 2 (FAIL) - This is because you have "ns1.powweb.com" and "ns2.powweb.com" set as the nameservers for your domain, but according to your host (Endurance), your domain's real nameservers are "ns1.yourhostingaccount.com" and "ns2.yourhostingaccount.com". This really isn't a big deal, I don't think.

Nameservers on separate class C's (WARN) - Not a problem.

TCP Allowed (WARN) - Not a problem, I don't think.

SOA MNAME Check (WARN) - related to the "Missing nameservers" issue above; not a problem.

Mail server host name in greeting (WARN) - According to that report, this is a technical violation of the RFCs, but it's probably not a big deal.

SPF record (WARN) - your domain has no SPF record.

Looking at your MX records, it looks like they are set up correctly to receive mail at Endurance.

The "Default to PowWeb" button actually works, but the results don't show up immediately on the page. I know, since I've used it myself. :)
