View Full Version : 500 Internal Server Error (Merged)
for the last 2 days my site has been intermittently getting "internal server error" and has been running REALLLL SLLOWWWWWW.
I just migrated to the new platform, 2 days ago, so my experience thus far has been 100% krap.. i virtually NEVER had issues on the old platform (ok, ONCE in a while, for short periods there would be problems)..
is this what we have to look forward to on the new platform? Since there is nothing posted in the outage and issues forum (http://forums.powweb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41) i have to assume this is business as usual???

Yup, I got the internal server error 500 several times today as well ... This is getting really old, really fast.

I'm getting this also this morning. Strange thing is, only one of my sites is doing this - the last one to be migrated. The other site is fine.
I've been getting the same thing since Saturday, AND my page load times are about 30-60 seconds.
I've opened a ticket, and so far gotten the same "we checked your site and it looks fine from here.." message..
OPEN A TROUBLE TICKET AND KEEP AT THEM! If we dont let them know, they can (or wont) fix it!
I also have two sites, and only one is having trouble.
The only differences is they are on different SQL servers, and the one that has no problems get's 20 hits per day, the one that does have problems gets several thousand per day.
THere is one other thread about this, so we arent the only ones with this problem.. Open a trouble ticket and KEEP BUGGING THEM ABOUT it !
it's now 5:30pm california time, and my site has been running well for at least the last hour.. it looks like whatever the problems was, they fixed it.

My forums are going to suffer because of the slowness. I think I'm going to have to submit a support ticket. Two days of slowness is frustrating and ridiculous. :(
Update: Thursday, August 17, 2006 12:00 AM
Received reply from support. Apparently my rewrites are to blame for the server errors on all your websites...
Well for god's sake, man, change your .htaccess file so that our sites will start working again! Jeez, some people have no respect... :)
It seems that you block any request which doesn't have a user-agent header, so that threw me off for a minute while I was trying to load your site, but for some reason, I don't think it was causing my site to load so slowly (or not load).
<sarcasm>
Seriously, though, what a helpful message. It was nice that support was able to pinpoint the exact error and told you how to fix it with such clear, concise details.
</sarcasm>
Of course this "Technical Support Specialist" never thought that I might have a specific purpose for blocking blank UAs and I might actually know what I'm doing
Oh give it up, already. We all know you have no clue what you're doing. Now just be a good little customer and do as support tells you :)
On a side note, I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that it's come to the point where we can joke about it...
Resistance is Futile....you shall be assimilated
One of my packages is so slow today I can't even work on it :(
This sucks and I am starting to be disgruntled!
I havnt had any issues for days.. i went thru my PHP.ini to verify all the settings are "correct" for the new platform - i wonder if that had something to do with my errors going away?
have you verified your PHP.INI is compatible after your migration?
Seems to be loading fast now.
I do wish the new staff would say something just to reassure everyone that whatever the problem was/is has been corrected.
Give Powweb a break. They have got to do something with the world's old 486 and 386 machines.
I think they spent the years budget on software instead of hardware. The legacy systems will be recycled back into the mix. Maybe then the load will be evened out again.

The Legacy hardware wasn't sold with Powweb - so they won't be added to the mix. We've not been given a definite fate for the old servers and other hardware, but Endurance don't own them.

Now I am getting this "The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log." error. At first it was only when I entered my gallery, and now my whole site is down. What kind of messed up servers did they move us to?

I am on day 4 with this error when you visit my website. I have not changed a thing sence our site was migrated. If the servers we are on now error all the time, why did we migrate to them?
How can a person run a website when thier visiters are seeing nothing but...
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.
By the way, there is no error log. Can Powweb please fix their servers!!!

Ok, the error no longer shows up when you first visit my website, but its still there when you try to go to our Gallery... http://www.msmcs.net/index.php?name=gallery
Again, there is no error log pointing out what the problem is.

Here we go again...
So far today, the Endurance raw logs show 16 "500 Internal server error" for my site.
I'm not trying to be nasty, but why haven't you moved hosts yet? I haven't had even half of the problems you've had (I've actually had very few), but I'm already in the process of moving my domains to a new host. I think the that 'new' PowWeb has already shown that not only won't customers get the same feature that had before, but that they won't be able to get decent support for existing features of the new platform.
Don't wait for the ship to sink under the waves before you get into a lifeboat. Since you've mentioned customer I assume that you run a business site - can you afford to have these continuing problems?

Thanks afilloon, but RocketJeff is appropriate to comment since I've been complaining about Endurance sine Day One of Migration (a better word would be "take-over.")
Problem after problem... non-stop. I am planning to change hosts, but it's a bit complicated at the moment.
As I said, I wasn't trying to be nasty (really, afilloon), I just can't understand why so many people are working so hard to get things working again when it would be easier to change hosts. You (keyplyr) have been working so hard to resolve the problems that it didn't seem logical that you were still here. Especially when the new PowWeb has either said that some things just won't work or obviously don't know why some things aren't working.
I'm a big believer in loyality and sticking with the people and companies that've worked hard for you. If this was the original PowWeb, I'd be sticking with them because I know they would be working their butts off trying to get things right and because they provided excellent hosting for many years. This isn't them, it's the new PowWeb where the only thing that's stayed the same is the name (and a few of the Forum staff).
And I can understand complications delaying the move - there's never a good time to migrate systems and this one was unexpected for most people.

If I were you, I go to http://members.powweb.com/webControl/LogFiles.bml and have the logs copied to your homedir. This way you could look at the log files yourself and see which file(s) are causing the error. From there, you may be able to then replicate it and hopefully resolve the issue.

This is off-topic (sorry!), but it appears that you (or someone at Endurance) has changed the line on the HTTP screen that says where to access your log files. As late as yesterday, it said "Log file information is now located in Site Tools." Now it says "Log file information is now located in Services > HTTP > Log Files." THANK YOU for changing it. I was going crazy trying to figure out where they were trying to send me.

Yes, mitchind was kind enough to point that out to me. Had it fixed in 5 minutes. :)
I've also received a couple of random "500 Internal server error" messages when I was checking whether updates to my sites where correct. I would agree with you that they are server malfunctions.

I have emailed tech support, called them & left multiple posts in this forum about my site being down for about a week now because of this error. Its still down today, and PowWeb doesn't seem to be interrested in fixing their problem. I am now packing my bags and planning on moving when my rent here expires on 10-22-06 (which would of been 5 years with PowWeb as my host)

The only php running on the page is an include to a text file.
God I'm glad I started the move to a new host. In the meantime I still need my sites visable here, so what is going on?!
More details would help us help you. Have you checked the CGI Error log in OPS? What is the name of the text file and what happens if you comment out the include?
s2ccaitlyn
8-26-06, 06:17 PM
text file: a table for easy update of a menu.
I tried, but there is a whole list of errors pertaining to things not even on my site anymore. Why there errors are there is beyond me. These should be 404 erros not cgi script error, because not only are the scripts gone, so are the pages they were on.
commenting out the include doesn't help.
Now it's timeout errors on everything including ops. Which I've read is a whole network problem?
Perhaps if you mentioned your domain, someone from staff might wander by and comment on what they find. I'm not getting any 500 errors from OPS or other PW pages.
Ive been getting a lot of them too lately, as well as "reset connection" errors..
www.dracutforum.com
I'm getting them too.
phpinfo doesn't seem to work.
http://www.pixpopuli.com/xphpinfo.php
Nut static content seems OK
Could be an intermittent thing. I tried a bunch of pages at dracutforum.com and had no problems. Also, neilb's phpinfo page comes up fine for me. Dunno....
s2ccaitlyn
8-26-06, 07:42 PM
I can give you the domain but the page that is really having the problem is one I can't share. It's not hidden or password protected, or anything like that. I just can't share it.
Mine seems to be OK at the moment. They must have fixed something.
Same here.. page not loading again and and off.. also getting 500.
My site is 100% fine. It's powweb acting up again like a week or so ago when dozens of people were posting about it..

8-26-06, 08:34 PM
god forbid they tell us any of this stuff. One of the major reasons I had moved to powweb in the first place was their tech support, which was 100 times better than my old host, but also because my old host never told anyone anyti\hing. The customers only ever recieved any info from them if they were reaching their bandwidth limit. I liked that pw shared info all the time with it's customers, letting them know when things were down what to expect all that stuff.
Now they don't. The lack of information mixed with the poor quality of service, and the horrible forced manual migration experience is what is sending me away.
Baring anymore days like today in the very near future, I won't be posting anymore as I'll be busy moving my sites (thanks to migration) for the second time this year. And doing my web business else where.

Every time I check my site there are problems (POWWEB problems - not mine)
I only check the site a few times a week. Imagine what my visitors are getting!
Okay I thought it was just me. It's affecting my php forum. I already sent in a support email. I guess I will have to wait and see. Would be nice for them to auto-reboot that server should it fail.

Well, I'm getting consistant comments from my users about lags, problems, and slow loading :(
I get those error pages frequently, and my users have mentioned them as well. Those are the only pages on my site that seem to load in less than ten seconds...
I get oddness every now and then where I click on a link to a PHP page and Firefox asks if I want to download or select an application to open the file. Dismissing the message and clicking on refresh loads the page as normal, but it's still strange.

My site (thefordmccord.com) is down right now as well due to the "HTTP 500 - Internal server error". Most of the page is simple php as well as a forum. It had been working fine...

Now there is no validity to this but when my forum is slow or not coming up. Seems like all I gotta do is log into OPS and it starts working again. Could say thats my problem but not when all other sites load fine. But it works every time unless there is a real outage problem.
I am getting these random errors also, as well as extremely slow page loads when I don't receive any error...Here is the page I am getting errors on,http://tstolze.net/foldy/, probably received about 20%-40% errors this morning. The slow loading on the rest of the site at http://tstolze.net/ .:(

tstolze,
You and I have identical problems. Mine are on three seperate sites while one other seems to be unaffected. It is certainly understandable that problems occur from time to time with Powweb. My only complaint is finding the answer as to whether or not they are actively working to resolve it! FIX it Powweb! Fix it, and report the problem to your customers. We're less likely to spend valuable time wondering if you know about it, and are working to repair it.

This makes me think of the old 1960s/70s thing about the Ford Pinto...
You'd think with so many people experiencing a problem, Powweb would be all over this issue. But for some reason this doesn't seem to be the case (hopefully I'm just wrong)!
You can't help but fear, someone, somewhere, is looking at two values in a spreadsheet and thinking, well for us to look into this and possibly replace this hardware/software will cost us $$$$$$, however if we predict X people leave then that will only cost us $$$$...

Possibly another thing that might make you think of the Ford Pinto is... You wrote an article about it (http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/1977/09/dowie.html) - LOL
Huh? How did I write that article?
But these Pintos worked, unlike my website for the last 3 weeks, going onto 4...
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.
I know its a MySQL error. But why will it not go away and my PostNuke site load? Does Powweb even care if thier clients website will not load and hasn't loaded for weeks? They allready have our money, and I am guessing they are not interested in any of us renewing with them. I am guessing they make enough money that customer satisfaction is not needed. My website @ http://www.msmcs.net expires on 11-22-06. Do you think I will be sending Powweb more money?

I've said it in other posts, and I'll say it here -- it isn't PowWeb's responsibility to make sure your site loads properly; it's your responsibility.
Now then, what specifically are you having problems with? I went to your "sam3.msmcs.net" site and got the following message:
status=err
SQL error=2003
SQL error string=Can't connect to MySQL server on '66.168.100.7' (111)
SQL=SELECT songlist.*, historylist.listeners as listeners, historylist.requestID as requestID, historylist.date_played as starttime FROM historylist,songlist WHERE (historylist.songID = songlist.ID) AND (songlist.songtype='S') ORDER BY historylist.date_played DESC LIMIT 6
That says that it cannot connect to the MySQL server on IP address 66.168.100.7. That's because the server is no longer at that address. It looks like your scripts need to be reconfigured to use the proper hostname (such as mysql01.powweb.com, mysql02.powweb.com, etc) instead of using an IP address. The MySQL page in OPS will tell you what host your database is on. Your photo gallery was displayed with no noticeable problems, as was your BlockNova page.

Granted some of the people here might be a bit confused about their true problem, but the majority of us are not. So don't treat us like stupid little children because I've had enough of powweb/endurance and it's groupies.
My 500 internal server errors are NOT a result of anything I am doing wrong. Within a few days of my original thread it seemed to clear up significantly. Coincidently there were a dozen other topics/replies just like mine that same week. And a reply from a staff member telling us that he can't understand why we're having problems when the majority of customers isn't. And my reply say we hear that crap from companies all the time who can't or don't want to fix a problem. Both were deleted, wonder why.
And DO NOT tell me it's not their responsibility to make sure the servers are running properly and to fufill their end of the contract. Because that is what we are paying them for.

Yep, that's me, just another Endurance groupie. You can really tell it by viewing my other posts...

I'm sorry, but when did I ever imply that the "500" errors were of your own doing? I think you'll find that I did not address you at all. I was addressing GTMac (you know, the one I quoted), so why you feel the need to go on a tangent like that against me is quite comical and nonsensical.
And DO NOT tell me it's not their responsibility to make sure the servers are running properly and to fufill their end of the contract. Because that is what we are paying them for.
By the way, they don't need to do anything to fulfill their end of the contract. I think you'll find in the Terms and Conditions that you agreed to that they promise absolutely nothing, and guarantee nothing. No, I don't agree with that part of the Ts&Cs, but it is what we agreed to when we signed up.

My site did load properly BEFORE the migration. My PostNuke site found here... http://www.msmcs.net/index.php no longer loads. I had to place a generic html page up on my site so people wouldn't think I left & abandened the site. I am now waiting for Powweb to step up and take responsibiluty on fixing their problems!

As for my radio station website aka http://sam3.msmcs.net not loading. I know what that is. Powweb closed all ports and stopped allowing data to be gathered from an outside server. This was their decision and I was told they will not change it. So that site can not be repaired.
My main complaint is why isn't my PostNuke site loading after the migration? Why am I getting this "500 Internal Server Error"? See for yourself... http://www.msmcs.net/index.php

This is something which has become quite an issue for many people, so I want to make this point clear. At some point, almost every single host will either change hardware or change software, and these changes may cause your site to stop behaving as it did before the changes were made. In PowWeb's case, these changes are migrating us over from the old PowWeb servers to the Endurance servers. Paths changed, file locations changed, restrictions were put in place, and the way things are called and run has changed. However, just because something was working properly before the migration does not mean it is PowWeb's responsibility to get it working again. It would be great if they did, but you cannot expect them to personally inspect every aspect of every site. It would be impossible.
Now, do I think the migration was a successful one? Not on your life. The migration was horrible for many of us. And tech support appears to be useless, with very few exceptions (as least judging from the replies I've received). Was the migration handled with proper planning and care? It certainly doesn't look like it to me. Was the proper information provided to us customers before, during, and after the migration (as was promised by the initial emails we received about it)? Not at all. This migration will go down in the pages of history as an example of how not to do things. But even given all that, it is our job, as webmasters of our own sites, to make sure our sites are properly maintained and configured. I understand that this can be difficult (especially when changes are made and no one tells the customers), but that doesn't take the responbility off of us, the webmasters.

Ah, my mistake. Sorry about that. I saw the beginning "66." and thought it was one of the old PowWeb mysql servers. I personally don't understand the policy of blocking (nearly) all outgoing connections, and I certainly don't agree with it. I think it's a poor decision whose hinderence is not worth the possible benefit. But that's just me.
My main complaint is why isn't my PostNuke site loading after the migration? Why am I getting this "500 Internal Server Error"? See for yourself... http://www.msmcs.net/index.php

I think, what I need to do is re-install PostNuke. it should not effect the database, and I am hoping I don't loose all my members accounts. If I do, I guess I will be forced to start over. I need to up-grade to the latest PostNuke anyways.

OK - I'm officially terrified by Powweb Support!
Given the current issues with Powweb's hosting returning "page not found" and "500 - Internal Server Error" at times, I set up www.websitepulse.com to test my site every ten minutes.
Armed with proof from that company at times was detecting these errors I raised the following support "ticket":-
Randomly, requests to my site results in either a "page not found error" or a "500 - Internal Server Error".
When you get one of these, typically a refresh on the browser (ie: trying the same URL again) then works.
I have monitoring software (www.websitepulse) monitoring the URL "www.**MYSITEREMOVED**.com", and the results from the past 24hrs highlight these issues!

From the forums it is clear many of your users are suffering from these problems, so I'd like to know what is being done to address them.
This problem manifested itself after migration so I can only assume it's a an issue with the new hardware etc.
Now here's the response I got:-
1) No acknowledgement of a known problem
2) They said they tested my SITES??? I only listed one!!! They actually tested www.websitepulse.com!!! LMFAO!
3) They suggested I clear out my cookies and cache to help resolve the problem.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. I tested your site www.websitepulse.com and www.**MYSITEREMOVED**.com I could access your site without any issue. Please access your site after clearing the cache and cookies from your browser. Also, try to access your site from other computer. If you continue to experience the same issue, please provide us the exact screenshot of error message so that we can investigate you further.
Please reply to this email with the requested information, so that we can assist you further.
I am now officially terrified!!! Why are these serious problems not a known issue throughout support? Why has this individual replied back to me with seemingly NO comprehension that people are actually LEAVING Powweb because of problems with Powweb's hosting platform!
Absolutely bemused and terrified!!! Truly rediculous!!! Will someone at Powweb please get ontop of this matter!!!
ps: I've posted this in both the existing threads regarding problems at Powweb. Something needs to be done!
After the migrations I've been seeing 500 errors for about 0.4% of all page requests. I'll contact PowWeb support, but by reading the comments here I've also opened a new account with another host.

Incredibly, I just keep getting "blanket" responses that seem completely unaware of the scale and nature of the problems their hosting platform has :(
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, I have checked your URL: www.**MYWEBSITE**.com/**MYDIR**/ and I haven’t received any internal server error and currently we don’t have any issue with our servers.
Normally internal server error occurs when customer having the issue with .htacess folder. However, I have checked your URL and its up and working fine. If you are still experiencing trouble in accessing your website, please get back to us with the ‘Screenshot of the error log generated’ so that we can assist you further.
They actually seem oblivious to the fact people are leaving their company due a problem that has been going on for weeks!!!

Set up a free trial account with www.websitepulse.com to monitor your site.
I would recommend doing it from two or three different locations every 5-10 mins. Bet you get errors reported every day!
It's VERY tempting to put Powweb's email address as the notification address of when problems are found!

No, I don't agree with that part of the Ts&Cs, but it is what we agreed to when we signed up.
I was speaking in general. I used "my" or "me" as a reference point for myself so I didn't get what I wanted to say confused.
Yes it is their responsibility when we give them money for a service, in the United States they are by law required to fufill a service. They can not, no matter what their tos says, take our money and give us nothing in return.
Granted they are giving us something, poor service, in the end they will lose a great deal of their customers. And porbably have a few BBB complaints filled against them.
When a simple page that has a single php include of a text file, and nothing else save for some html, can not load they are not providing the agreed apon service. There is nothing that can be changed from the webmasters end to make the file load, it is a server problem. Because it is a SERVER problem, not a bad coding problem it can NOT be fixed from the webmasters end.
And I do take all of this personally. Before moving to powweb my site averaged about 5,000 to 10,000 unique visitors a day depending on what was going on. After two months here that dropped down to about 300 to 500 a week for a time, then bounced back and forth from 500 to 1000 a day.
Given that for the majority of that time I was able to maintain a first page google listing for my major key words that were frequently searched apon, I should have been getting more than double that. And it should have been steadily increasing. But it wasn't. So I checked the logs, and polled some of my visitors.
Turns out people didn't stick around to wait for the pages to load. Those who did frequently encounter errors. And this was back when I didn't even know php existed. I was using only html not even javascript. And this was with the old powweb too.
I'm not going any further into it, I think you get the idea. There have been many who have been complaining for a while now. Most of them have moved on. I moved one of my sites, but one is still here for now.

GreatCareerOption doesn't really do anything, but sites like www.greatmassageschools.com and blog.strive4impact.com are hosted there.
Any ETA on the decision regarding what to do about the underlying network slowness at peak periods?

I called tech. support, and a tech (Matthew) was actually able to get the error while on the phone with me...
He screen shotted it (is that a verb? -shotted?)
He escalated the issue to a second level technician... and gave me a ticket #
But now all seems to be back to normal.
There is definitely something on the network traffic end, Powweb's end (or from someone's site?) that is causing slowdowns, timeouts, and errors.
I understand that if the problem is a bandwidth issue, Powweb is working on creating a solution to the problem, but I haven't seen any official communication on the issue since this post:
http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?p=395264#post395264
Powweb, if you're reading, I think people's biggest issue is simply not knowing what's going on, and when we call Tech. Support, the lower level techs don't seem to have any idea what we're talking about, even though we've been talking about it for a while.
Even if you were to post 1x/day and say, "We are still working on a solution" or something like that, at least people would feel heard and acknowledged.
I'm not going anywhere, I like Powweb. I like the changes you've made. I just think we're used to lots of communication and that *seems* to have decreased (might not have actually) since the changeover.
And now, the message we've all come to know and lov...er... umm... Anyway, here's the error.

If it's on every request then no... It's a permission/typo problem.
If it's intermittent (1 in every 100 requests sort of thing), then yes, welcome to Powweb!
I re-installed PostNuke using Powweb's installer. Up-date it to the latest version, and installed a few modules. Including PNphpBB2 forums. Good news is, I no longer get this 500 error. Bad news, I lost all my members acccounts, posts/replies in the forums, basicly had to start from the beginning.
Note, my website does load now, but its slow as hell. Leaving forum browsing impossible unless you have alot of time to wait for each page to load. This will not work, and its still forcing me to move to a better host.
What does Powweb/Endurance staff have to say? Why the big mystery? Why are you guys keeping silent about this?
I ditto these questions.

I'm not sure why, I get 2 time outs. sometimes my page won't load, and I get a page not found, but if I click refresh, it comes back. I browse other sites, and all works well, just not my page. it doesn't happen all the time, but random.
having my site in this state is not a good way to build an online community.

Hey hey hey!!
It does specifically mention "page not found" or "500 Internal Server Error", but got this response:-
We have noticed an increase in requests being offered to our servers. We have recognized this as offsetting our current load balancing configuration which results in customers experiencing intermittent service. We have already begun implementation of a solution that should remedy the situation. Currently we have already added more boxes and we are in the process of installing more in the days to come. This will help with the load balancing thus providing a more reliable service.
So fingers crossed!!!

When I first signed up for PowWeb one of the things that drew me to them was the reliability. I thought I'd see what they're telling new customers now to get them to sign up.
From http://www.powweb.com/powweb/pop_tour.bml?step=2:
PowWeb is built on high-performance and reliability. Don't settle for downtime, host your Web site like the big guys! PowWeb uses similar technology to Google, Yahoo and Microsoft to ensure maximum uptime!
No More Embarrassing Downtime
100% Redundant Connections
Carrier-Class Infrastructure
I hope those customers who are drawn in by this false advertising are ready to make some custom error pages!
As already noted here and in other threads, the 'problem' sometimes stems from the routing and the requests don't even get to Powweb - so custom error pages wouldn't help. The servers themselves are running - the problems don't come from that.
However, it seems that the routing to Powweb/Boston is OK from outside the US but parts are experiencing difficulties (statement is based upon tracerts from different parts of Europe and US).
Yet another error trying to work on the Powweb servers - Ian don't bother I've contacted CS - uselessly I might add...
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, support@powweb-inc.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

Is everyone who is getting an "500 - Internal Server Error" getting it from a PHP request? Or has anyone got it from any other scripting (eg: perl)?
ie: Is this just a PHP issue?
I've now gotten a ticket escalated up to me ... I've narrowed down at least one cause of a very repeatable ISE and I expect that we'll be able to solve at least some of these in the very near future.

I've now gotten a ticket escalated up to me ... I've narrowed down at least one cause of a very repeatable ISE and I expect that we'll be able to solve at least some of these in the very near future.
My friend, if you can get it fixed (& the page not found errors), I suspect you'll hear the cheers from where you're sitting! :D

I don't think it'll fix all of them. But it'll fix at least some of them that are afflicting people. It's a random confluence of events and should be an easy fix for one of our admins.
Again ... I don't think if this will fix the majority or a small minority. But it'll fix some.
The problem that we're in the process of fixing is that we've added some new CGI servers, but they weren't looking in the right place for users, so some users who had CGI fulfilled recently would have a request pushed to a new server, but the new server wouldn't think they could legally run CGI. That's been fixed.
Likewise, some users who had CGI fulfilled recently were getting the old version of the PHP binary. That's in the process of being fixed.
I don't think this is the root cause of everyone's issues, but it's bound to resolve some of them. The additional capacity should also help to lower the load across the CGI pool, which should also help to resolve the issue (though, again, I'm guessing there's still something else going on here ... but I need something to test).

OH! But can we have some official declaration that these problems WILL be looked into and WILL be solved!? I had three "500 - Internal Server Error's" in the space of 15mins this afternoon :(
This has been going on for weeks and the response from Powweb has not instilled confidence :(

Why are we getting this information in dribs and drabs... Why isn't there an official statement of the problems, the investigation going on, and how it's going to get solved!?

Total for today is now 40 "500 Internal server errors" and climbing.
Many of these users do not know this is a server malfunction and to reload the page. They will just go somewhere else to shop and never return.
What really infuriates me is when staff refers to this (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?p=397007#post397007) as an inconvenience:
This goes far beyond just a mere inconvenience. Blocking our customers from accessing our website costs us sales, diminishes our current and future traffic potential and damages our branding power. Building a name that users trust takes years, but only minutes to destroy by displaying these errors.
Fixing this and the other associated random server errors should be the first priority of business.
You pay bannnas ($7.77) and you get monkeys (ahem...).
If i were you i'd move your site right away to a company with a clean track record and good uptimes.
It's your business that depends on it - if i had a business site it certainly wouldnt be on powweb.
Make sure you find a new host that doesnt accept too many customers so when a large scale problems happen they can resolve it in hours, not days or weeks.

Making a statement admitting there is a problem would go against policy, because then the rest of the 149,000 customers that dont even know the problem exists will find out.

There is an attempt... Be it somewhat vague...

^ Aint that a *****!! haha oh my this is bad, we're now making jokes of our poor situation...
maybe because our situation is a joke....
I think Endurance is like a company called iiNet here in Australia. They're experts at buying everything in the country, but when it comes to fixing their problems they're too big, and a few customers being put out is not a big deal to them.
So after the stock market woke up and realised they were getting too big for themselves, their stock price dropped 50% in one day... how unfortunate.
Something like that would really make a company wake up to themselves i would say...
I can assure you that this problem is being looked in to. I've got an email with some usernames and websites that are being investigated and looked at.
We've got *a lot* of servers. We don't think it's just a capacity issue, so we're looking into what the issue might be. We've added capacity recently, which is something I was mentioning earlier -- the 500 ISEs in the ticket I was seeing were related to a couple of new servers being added and the user authentication mechanism on those servers missing some users who'd added CGI in the few days before the new boxes. That problem is now resolved, but obviously, that's a minority.
Let me try this. Can you let me know:
1) An exact URL that is exhibiting this issue
2) The time of day that is most reproducable (please list your time zone or convert to Eastern)
3) If PHP/MySQL, version of PHP and MySQL server running
If you don't feel comfortable posting that here, feel free to PM me. I might not respond, but I'll collect all the info, see if I can find a trend, and work with our Network Operations team to figure out what's going on.
I apologize that you all feel like we're abandoning you. I can definitely assure you we're not. I'm not here as much as I wish I could be because I have other responsibilities in my job. But we are looking into this and into the "slow load time/ftp issues". We've got discussions with our upstream providers and I've taken the opportunity to talk to a few people and get their traceroutes to see if it's a routing issue, or if it's a capacity issue. I'm not a network/peering expert, so I can't say how/if/when/what will be resolved, but the data is in the right hands and will be discussed (I believe today, but I don't know for sure).
I'll make sure the same happens here. It's actually already in their hands, but it's fairly vague. The most specific the data, the better.

team-worc came back this morning and was working fine but I can't get to it at all now. Mtbireland is really slow again but does open eventually. This has been ongoing since last week! Variouis tickets opened with support.
I have been having issues for the past hour and 1/2 (Starting at 9:00am est). Getting random 500 errors, file include errors, and extreme slowness on the site.

Is anyone getting this on anything other than PHP?
Something in another thread perked my ears up.
I don't see these 500 errors, myself (I just checked my logs for the month so far, and have gotten absolutely none, on a site that uses PHP and MySQL on virtually every page - specifically, PHP 4.) Very early on I had noticed in my CGI error logs errors related to the Zend Optimizer not supporting the version of PHP, and that the paths in the default php.ini were incorrect for Zend. I corrected that, which got rid of the CGI errors.
Might the 2 be related? Are the folks seeing the 500 errors also seeing errors about Zend in their CGI logs?

Yeah i seem to get those Zend errors in the CGI log but i ignored them as i didnt think they were important... i dont even know what Zend is...
Can anyone shed some light on the importance of the correct details for zend in php.ini?
This is what I have set up for Zend in my php.ini (which as I stated above is for PHP4)
zend_optimizer.optimization_level=15
zend_extension_manager.optimizer=/usr/local/Zend/Zend-2.6.2/lib/Optimizer-2_6_2
zend_extension_manager.optimizer_ts=/usr/local/Zend/Zend-2.6.2/lib/Optimizer_TS-2_6_2

Here's some realtime info for you (i.e. I'm helping to debug some of this stuff right now).
Your sites happened to be sharing CGI resources on a pool of servers with someone who's site was being exploited. Once we turned off the exploited user's CGI access, your site (and everyone else's sharing that pool) came back a good bit speedier.
Also, on the Zend front:
If you don't need Zend, you probably should disable it in your PHP.ini (there's no reason to use it in our environment, since we're not running mod_php), and it pretty much just adds another layer to route data through.
If you need Zend, it's probably not causing 500 ISEs, but making sure you're pointed to the right paths is a good start.
We've been looking into as many of these as we can. I still haven't been able to reproduce an ISE (but from log entries and screen shots, we certainly know they've happened).
As mentioned earlier, some of the slowness we've narrowed down to CGI servers getting hammered when a spammer exploits a PHP script (we've seen this *a lot* lately, so make sure you're PHP apps are up-to-date). It also seems to be limited to PHP (or, more accurately, CGI -- or, in some cases, HTML via PHP), so we're looking into any capacity issues.
I'm kind of dying for a chance to see a live 500 ISE, so I'll be hanging out here as much as I can today. If you get to a situation where you see a 500 ISE happen (or maybe happen twice), PM me so I can try to reproduce it and we can get to the bottom of why it is happening.
Once again, they are random.
Example scenario: I land on a webpage hosted by Powweb/Endurance. The server malfunctions and instead of sending the webpage, sends a 500 Internal Server Error default page. If I reload, the correct webpage will be displayed as intended.
I definitely get that they are random, but it's just with the frequency they've been mentioned, I thought it might be particularly problematic certain times during the day, or on certain pages.
I'm just hoping to get something that we can even remotely reproduce. We're still looking/evaluating, but it's just hard to narrow this down ...
The number of timeouts and 500 error pages seems to have increased 10 fold on my site this evening, especially when using my site forum.
They may be totally unrelated but it seems that the trade off for a faster site is more of these errors!!!!

My pages that involve SQL have loaded much much faster since the server was rebooted yesterday.
However i'm not being greatly affected by 500 server errors, i just checked the raw logs and it doesnt appear ive had many in the last day or so....
The exact error in my CGI logs about Zend is:
PHP Warning: Zend Optimizer does not support this version of PHP - please upgrade to the latest version of Zend Optimizer in Unknown on line 0

I was getting this Zend Optimizer error too and not sure what script it was bumping up against. I did a search of the forum and I found some code that I updated in, I believe, the .htaccess.
Do a search and see if you can find it.

^ Good idea!
Just searched the forum and found this page:
http://forums.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=68911&highlight=Zend+Optimizer
Should be the fix for Zend. I dont even know what Zend does but still, it cant hurt to get it working right- if it needs to work, it now can.
Thanks for the info entrecon!

Okay folks, this thread has fulfilled its usefulness. I realize there are still users with problems, and for that, I sincerely apologize. If you are experiencing the issues previously discussed within this thread, please contact support through an official channel. Fellow users will not be able to assist with these issues.
That being said; however, continuing to drag this thread along serves no productive purpose to the community. Future threads on this subject will not be accepted.
Thread closed.
Tom gave me permission to post this update in this thread:
I appreciate those of you who sent over some info. Along with the issue we resolved a few a days ago, we just found a server that had it's default routing setup improperly. When I checked, a good portion of the sites mentioned in the past couple of days were served by this pool. I've been watching them over the past few hours and haven't been able to reproduce a problem. So that should take care of a big chunk.
So:
1) Two servers in a CGI pool wasn't picking up new CGI fulfillment, and was ISEing every few requests, solved Monday.
2) One pool getting hammered by an exploited script (I mean literally just hammered). Killed the script, that pool is back to normal with no reported ISEs.
3) One server in a pool had a default route set up improperly that was the most reliable ISE we've been able to reproduce. Once reproduced, we fixed it, and those sites seem to be working well and stable.
There might still be some ISEs for customers. One thought is that some sites might be exceeding the 10 concurrent database connections limit. That should throw an error in your cgi_error_log though, so it probably only explains some.
Feel free to PM me if you're still seeing the issue at a reproducable clip and we'll try to investigate. We've been looking into a bunch the most reproducable ones seem to have been resolved.
