View Full Version : Web-based uploading
I've been using powweb for a while now (www.gekkevogel.com (http://www.gekkevogel.com/)) and I've always missed the possibility to use a webbrowser to upload files, since my office-pc's network doesn't allow me to access ftp-servers through a normal ftp-client (works only through internet exploiter). By posting on this board I'm trying to find out how many of you people are waiting for this functionality as well, so we could perhaps show all together that this is a function that should soon be implemented.
So I ask you all, what's your opinion on this  ??
I don't have FTP access here at work; I can't use a FTP client or through the browser, but this should work, but I can't test it here at work. The basic form of FTPing through the browser is typing this in the address bar:
ftp://username@www.domainname.com
With Powweb you would use the name that they I_have_a_foul_mouthI_have_a_foul_mouthI_have_a_fou l_mouthigned your account, for example:
ftp://username@venus.powweb.com
You would then be prompted for your pI_have_a_foul_mouthI_have_a_foul_mouthI_have_a_fo ul_mouthword.
Hope this helps.
Sorry about then profanity filter. This has been fixed now.
From my understanding, a browser based file uploader may be included in the proposed site manager soon to be added here at powweb.
However, it's my experience that if you can somehow arrange to use a personal ftp client, you are much better off. Unless enough bandwidth is earmarked for this, shared ftp clients tend to become resource intensive and slow way down.
Whenever I try to drag&drop a file onto the window, it asks me if I would like to open the specific file, or save it to disk, and I've already tried to proceed on that, but it will never save the file on my account, I can not upload anything.
I've got Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.00.2462.0000 English.
Does anyone have any idea how I can still upload files although I can't use a normal ftp-client ?
(Maybe a microsoft ftp-client..)

Can telnet be used to upload files?
I think I recall reading the the FAQ that Telnet is not supported. That would be nice if they could implement it, but I've never heard any word about it.
If you PHP-Nuked your site there is a file manager built into it, and would allow you to upload files from just the browser, errrr it might be an add-on module, and if so you might be able to just get the module to work on it's own, it looked prety full featured...
and just a side question, at work if they don't want you using an FTP client, (problly `cause it's not job related) ;) what are you doing? :)
Paul
I don't think that PHP-nuking is very legal, although I don't know exactly what it is, but if it is by some way possible to upload files to my site, then that's cool and I would like to know how it works. Tell me more, maybe by sending an e-mail to pieter@gekkevogel.com.
And oh yes, I work at a technical support hotline in Europe for the handspring visor and treo products, and they are palmtops running the Palm OS. I do that for all german and english speaking customers, except for the USA.
About 3 to 3.5 hours a day I speak with customers on the phone. The rest of the time I'm waiting for a call or answering an e-mail. In total I'm logged in at least 7 hours into my phone, so I'm waiting 4.5 to 5 hours waiting, doing nothing. Luckily I got internet, but they blocked some stuff because people were abusing it do download games and movies, etc.
So know I want something that works, so I can work on my website again.
Hehehe, php nuke is an "information/interactive web site" in a can. I run one myself, http://monkey*****.net, as a test. One of its administrative capabilities is a built in web based file manager. Works quite well. :)
If you’re not familiar with PHP or mySQL, I do not recommend rushing out an trying to install this. If you are willing to wait another few days, we are aiming to release our new Operations website (aka "Ops") next Monday. Part of this will be a Webmasters Area which will have a file manager you can use.
Sincerely,
FunkyBacon
