I have had a website with Powweb for a year and up until I tired to change my domain name and renew my account for another year everything was fine.
Now I have been charged for a years membership and for changing my domain but I have not recieved either.
I cannot upload to my website because the domain name they claim to have registered for me hasn't been registered at all despite powweb having charged me for the priveledge. I have checked the domain name with powweb's own whois search and it's still freely available.
I asked for the changed to be made a week and a half ago and have had to exchange 20+ e-mails with the various powweb support people who all seem to be in completely seperated from each other because none of them have a clue what is or has/hasn't been done.
I have repeatedly tried to call the tech support phone number but it keeps going through the same automated response before cutting me off. I've tried calling at various times during the day and night and have gotten nowhere at all each time.
As far as I can see offering a person something (hosting and a domain) and taking the money for it ($95) without actually giving the person what they have paid for is STEALING!!! plain and simple.
Now the big question is, is someone from Powweb going to sort this out or not?
My phone number is in my account details and as I have gotten nowhere with either e-mail support or phone support someone really ought to contact me hadn't they.
I have been speaking to Winnie C. if that makes any difference.
Hi,
We do know what we are doing and I think you have a misunderstanding of what we charged you for. You only paid $93.24 which covers only hosting. $7.77 x 12 =$93.24
We have already done the domain name change for you from thedolphinbar.com to setiteam.com Your hosting account is now under setiteam.com
If you want it to work, you need to make sure you actually own the domain name setiteam.com since everything on our end has been done already.
Someone registered it. Hope it was you, thedolphinba.

Doh!, isn't even the word.
I've been running my mouth for the last week shouting at anyone at powweb who would listen, and the whole time it was my fault!!!
How dumb do I feel? pretty damn dumb, I can tell you!
I'd like to take this oppotunity to apologise both to Winnie (who has maintained amazing composure thoughout this) and Christian G who was originally handling my dopy brain dead problems.
I don't doubt that I have upset more people than that, but I don't know who they are, so they will have to make do with a 'general' apology for now.
I'm sorry I'm stupid in the ways of webbing, but ewhat can I say, it's a steep old learning curve.
SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY !!!
Hey Dolphin Dude,
Don't feel so bad about shooting your mouth off before getting your brain trained. Almost everybody... well, a whole lot of us anyway... no, make that some of YOU... have done the same thing before.
At least you had the cajoles to own up to it. Bravo.
I just got thru watching these Powweb folks do a week-long battle with some DNS attacker(s) that really screwed things up for several of the sites I have hosted with them. They did well under fire - they are OK with me.
If you want somebody to roast, go open an account with Hostsave and try to get them to give a hoot about you.

I agree. Bravo.
As you all most probably have noted by now, Winnie is sharp as a tack :D You'll be hard pressed to get anything past her.
Glad this was resolved!
:o “Running my mouth…, Dumb…, Dam Dumb…, I'm stupid…”
Ok, I think you trashed yourself enough. We all make mistakes, but it takes a lot to say your wrong.
That is correct man, it takes a lot to admit to fault, so I give you props. and I just wanted to post here and say hi, I want my avatar soon..

thanks for the forgiveness guys, I'll try and keep my mouth in 'park' from now on.
I'm having trouble uploadoing to my site still, I think it might be something I've done (again). A friend registered the domain I wanted without me knowing it, he knows what he's doing with that kind of stuff, but I want to be sure it's all done right.
I sent him all the details from the DNS tab in my OPS page and he tells me that he's changed all the records to point to powweb's venus server (where I'm hosted).
The site is wisible when you go to the www.setiteam.com URL, but still I can't upload.
I know I have tried to upload to http://setiteam.com, but the error says it's not there.
Anyone have any ideas or know how to check that all the DNS stuff is how it should be?
Thanks,

It takes 48 to 72 hours to propagate completely. Sometimes it may work sometimes it may not because of the nature of the inner workings of the web. Give it a couple days. If the problem does not resolve you should contact customer service.

I've tried logging into my mail accounts and they don't work either. Any ideas?

venus.powweb.com isn't the nameserver for powweb, just make sure your domain nameservers are set up for:
ns3.powweb.com
ns2.powweb.com
give it a couple days to propagate and it should work.
Even I have made mistakes before ;)
Apology accepted..!

Excellent point--I totally missed that...

Same reason--propagation.
Just curious but, her site is coming up on the web. Is the www.setiteam.com site being hosted elsewhere right now. In any case, she should be able to ftp the files now.

does anyone know where I would check that the DNS is done correctly? is there a website that I could go to?
And you really think it could take 2 or more days to fully propogate?
When my friend changed the domain so it would point to powweb, the site was available immediately using the setiteam URL. I thought that would be it and it would all work properly from there.
I hate all this waiting stuff. I think that's why I lose my head sometimes. :)
Yeah I takes that long :(
You can go to http://directnic.com and do a whois search.

I know the waiting sucks, but imagine if they had to update the nameservers by carrier pigeon....
I'm impressed that thousands of computers all over the planet can update in that small amount of time.
Yeah it does take that long, also if you did not get the domain from powweb, most domain control panels have the option to use your own.
just wanted to post
btw:
Anyone know how use vhost in apache?
thanks in advance
How much detail do you need on vhosting in Apache?
Settings in httpd.conf are fairly easy but there's also security considerations. :)
To see your domain's vhost config, go into OPS, hit the HTTP tab and scroll to the bottom of the page.

I just got used to e-mailing someone and it only taking a couple of seconds, you kinda feel that in the digital age everything should be instant.
except coffee, there's no substitute for the real thing :)
Oh, and I tried to FTP but no luck there either. I'm no FTP genius either, but I followed the instructions on the Powweb site.
Try connecting to yourserver.powweb.com (which yourserver is the name of the planet or space thing that your account is hosted on.) You can find this out in Ops under packages then go to Packages then select domains.

When fast says that, he means most ftp software doesnt require the FTP:// r the www. or the http:// or http://www. so try to not include that in the address you enter. If all else fails, let one of us try it, then u can change yoru password laters. Just to see if its you or the site. (I assume you know I don't mean to post your username/pass here).
I recently helped change over a web site in South Texas and at last count after 5 days it still had not propagated to their DNS Server. I finaly set up their computers to use powweb's DNS Servers
Thanks, i'll look into both and compare..

I've got in using WS_FTP and I've now managed to upload through frontpage via FTP using venus.powweb.com and my username/password, and now the website has completely disappeared!!!
I get a 404 error when trying to use the URL, where before I at least got the old version of the page before all this started.
I can see all the pages etc. through WS_FTP on the server but I'm not getting anything via IE. What's up with that then?
Is there a way I can speed up the propagation or at least confirm that it's going ahead. I'll be really pissed if I have to wait a week and then it's not done, and I have to start from scratch!

Make sure all of the pages, etc, are inside the htdocs folder in your FTP program. I'm getting a good PING for www.setiteam.com. (the IP matches venus.powweb.com).

right, I've got it sorted now.
It seems to have propagated now. When I changed the upload to venus.powweb.com in FrontPage it uploaded into the root rather than htdocs (thanks for that bbebow).
I still need to do lots of work on the site, but now the upload will automatically go through FTP in FrontPage 2002 to venus.powweb.com rather than the standard upload method.
How do I change the upload path back to http://setiteam.com? when I click on upload it automatically does everything without asking me.
Thanks for the help again guys, I'm pretty excited to actually have the site up, even if there's still a few niggles to sort out.
The sinner hath repenteth, Hallelujah!!!
You can leave it at venus.powweb.com it has no difference. I use lunar.powweb.com b/c my domain hasn't switched over yet, but when it does, I will just leave it at that.
Best,
I'd be checking the DNS changes have been made!
You can upload using venus.powweb.com instead of ftp.setiteam.com
I use www.demon.net/external to do DNS and whois queries.

FastLaneWeb, why do you change your avatar so much?
BTW I noticed it was Bennet (Australian, Vernon Wells) from Commando. He was also Mr Iago in Innerspace and the nutty guy who's after Mel Gibson in Mad Max 2.
In case you didn't know. :)
I am changing it b/c I am trying to find the right one. I don't exactly like this one but it is better. I need to take a pix of me holding a gun instread.
Thanks for the update. I didn't pay that close attention to who was in the pix.

Yes, I do the same thing -- less margin for error IMHO.

Ya, good stuff. I think I got my character names mixed up. I thought Arnie played Bennet in Commando. "Remember I said I would kill you last?--I lied." Classic.

Arnie wplayed Colonel John Matrix.
One of my favorite all timne cheesy Arnie lines was at the end when he pins Bennet to the boiler with a big length of pipe and the pipe goes through him and into the boiler leaving steam pouring out of the end of the pipe. 'Let off some steam Bennet'
SO bad, it has to be remembered!
BTW when I try and upload onto my site, it always seems to take ages, like it's uploading the whole site. I've tried setting it in FrontPage to only upload changed pages and tried both the settings for timestamps and the other one to see if it will speed things up, but it's taking 20 minutes to upload, and my site is less than 1mb total. I'm only changing a few lines of text and formatting when I upload, so it ahould be going fairly quickly, but it's not. In the progress box it shows all my files being uploaded (very slowly).
