Several of the threads on this forum have gotten a bit personal and snippity as of late, and i wanted to make a plea to everyone who uses this valuable resource.... please treat your neighbors with some respect and dignity.
We all have various levels of experience in different areas of web development, we all make mistakes in diagnosing problems, we all come here to give help and to get help....
Web development is complex. When something doesn't work quite right, there are many possibilities. A packet of information in the Internet travels through dozens of switches, routhers and hosts, and the slightest problem with any of them could cause problems. We use several tools in working on our sites, FTP clients, page editors, scripting languages, etc. There are many places where a simple mistake can result in hours of troubleshooting and frustration.
I find that when i try to claim some high level of expertise to support an assertion that someone else has screwed up, i am generally closed to the possibilities of other potential problems/solutions. At that point, i have made up my mind that person "X" or company "Y" is to blame. I have been wrong. Often.
When i try to troubleshoot someone's problem, i generally make the mistake of "knowing" what they did "wrong". I have been wrong. Often.
When the frustration level climbs because of an unfulfilled expectation that something should work just so, it is easy to slip into faulting someone with unkind language.
The bottom line is that PowWeb provides an excellent (not perfect) service, with great features, at a price that is a bargain. Every web host that i work with has occasional problems. Of the seven hosts that i work with, the only host that is more reliable charges $29.95 for a site that is comparable to the $7.77 site here. For some perspective, that's about a quarter a day. It's a web site, not a life-support system.
I am asking that we not flame each other. I would like to keep leaving the "Email Notification" box checked, but i quickly tire of taking my time to check the forum just to see someone venting their frustrations (which is, i suppose, what this post amounts to....).
I will try to contribute what i can here, with respect. We have a great resource here, and can build a community that works together peacefully and productively.
Peace,
- Earl
