View Full Version : Calculation of bandwidth in a month

I understand that I have to pay @ $8 per gb exceeding the monthly limit. My question is: If on some days the usage is 220 mb/day, on others 440 mb/day, does the calculation average out the above, or PowWeb would just take the higher one and multiply it by the number of days in the month?

If I'm thinking in the right frame of mind, "1st cup o coffee"

it's a total accumulation for the month that counts" moneywise", but it's measured daily, becasue of posssible bandwidth overuns and excessive server resources , that affect everyones accounts.......If you exceed the monthly 12G, then they start charging $8 , a Gig over your 12G.....

I believe that if you exceed the max. Daily... or are pushing it... they will e-mail you , and inform you of the fact...
1. you are aware of the fact
2. So you might remove some of the bandwidth hogs from your site, so you don't run over the monthly quota
3. So you can re-design, or re-think your use od some items you might have on your site... so it doesn't impact other users on the server...

This is a Question Best posed to Tech Support.... but if they have already sent you an e-mail regarding this... you need to respond accordingly, so they won't interrupt service... "they will if you don't respond"....

Hope this helps...

I have not started using the site yet; just want to clarify a bit. I have meanwhile written to PowWeb on this point.

I have received a reply from PowWeb:

"We will add it together. Whatever at the end of the month is more than 12 gigs, then we will charge you for those."

Hi, I'm new here having recently transfered my domain to Powweb. There's lots to like about the service they offer. Tech Support is prompt and efficient for one.

As I am also concerned about not incurring data transfer charges, I asked tech support if there was a service I could check into that showed me exactly what our data transfer status was at any given time. I was told there isn't.

I'd like to know how closely the figures Webstats report, match with the actual figures as accumulated by Powweb? Can I rely on them?

Also would Powweb consider offering its users a web access service showing their relevant up to date bandwidth use, and maybe also make available the actual amount of data they have stored in their webspace allowance at any given time? Perhaps in the ops area?

tebs,
The very fact that PowWeb provides an open forum shows how genuine it is being. I have been with PowWeb for only a few weeks, so far so good. Regarding monitoring bandwidth usage, I came across a posted reply/message from PowWeb somewhere saying that PowWeb is in the process of achieving that.

<---------Signed up before the 12 gig limit was imposed

<---------Doesn't have to pay for going over 12 gigs.... until renewal time :D

weeeeeee

[edited by admins: WRONG, you pay for what you use over 12 Gb, if you dont pay, you are shut down]

See my posting on "I got stuck 10 days after 30 day money back guarantee". My first month was not over the limit, but there may be one or two days eratic jump, then I got a mail in the second month saying it is likely to be 30 gb per month, despite the fact that I know it would never be the case basing on my past 6 months record (and also the first month in PowWeb proved that). It is not I don't trust PowWeb (otherwise I would not have subscribed one-year), it is just that I don't feel comfortable signing a blank acknowledgement, so I asked to have 4 days to transfer to another hosting company where monthly cost is higher, but the charge is certain.

PowWeb is kind enough to (1) give me 4 days to transfer to another site, and (2) in all fairness under the circumstances, give a pro rata refund to me.

I am in the process of complying with the above.

We got a nice letter (July) when the ground rules changed, and in it they stated, clearly in three different sentences, that we would continue to have unlimited traffic as we signed up before July.

"4) Bandwidth - We have changed the "unlimited traffic" to a
maximum of 12 gigs of data transfer per month for new customers.
We will still honor the "unlimited traffic" to all customers
who signed up before July 18, 2001. You will not be charge for
bandwidth even if your data transfer is over 12 gigs. The 12
gig bandwidth only applies to new customers."

We paid in advance for two years....

But now we have an e-mail telling us that we have exceeded the 12GB and that we have 24 hours to send The Fax or our site will be terminated.

I hope your new host's charge really is certain. That was why we came to PowWeb ... and thought we had the rate/arrangements locked in until renewal time....

FYI: Our polices never changed. Before when we had "unlimited bandwidth" it was just like now, we had NO limit on the amount of bandwidth any one customer can use. However, had you taken the time to read our ToS and FAQ about it, it stated CLEARLY that anyone using of 12 GB per month was considered a bandwidth abuser and their account was subject to termination.

The ONLY thing we changed was bringing the small print to the front. Now we give you a chance to pay for what you use instead of shutting down your site.
