View Full Version : Site issues?

I seem to be having issues with my site. www.jewelry.restoredspirit.com

I was on it earlier today and other people were able to access it as well. This evening, I cannot get it to come up. I get redirected to a search page. However, there is another PC in the house that can get to it. I would think that would be a problem on my computer, but there is at least one other person all the way across the country who cannot get to it either.

Anyone have any ideas? This is getting really frustrating.

It is working fine for me, at a guess, on the other side of the world.

Try clearing your cache and flushing your dns. It is probably a problem with either your computer (and friends). Ask if you don't know how to flush your cache and dns.

I tried again with Opera, Netscape, Firefox and IE6 - all worked perfectly and at a reasonable speed.

The problem could be the intermittent problems that many seem to be having. All I can do is report it worked fine for me.

I get "Server Not Found" here as well :(

When I got to work, I tried again *hoping it was just a fluke last night* but no go. I got the same message that keyplyr posted above. That was about an hour ago.

I tried it five minutes ago and it's working now. I did not make any changes on my PC here - no clearing of cache or DNS. ARGGGGHHH! Glad it's up, but for how long?

At the moment, I'm still getting a "Server Not Found" error when I try http://www.jewelry.restoredspirit.com/ - even after clearing my cache

http://www.restoredspirit.com/ does load, just not the jewelry subdomain.

Thanks for trying (jj)

Right - the subdomain is the part that is giving me all the issues. I have not had any problems at all getting to the domain (www.restoredspirit.com) I had put the jewelry site as a subdomain since there were other things I wanted to do with it and I thought it would help keep things better separated. I'm beginning to rethink that decision.

Even now, I can get to the subdomain, but I know of at least 5 others, spread throughout the US, that cannot get it to open. At least a couple of those were able to access it yesterday.

http://restoredspirit.com/jewelry/ takes me to the Restored Spirit Arts page.

http://jewelry.restoredspirit.com/ gives me a "could not be resolved by DNS" error.

I just tried again and now http://restoredspirit.com/jewelry/ is also giving me the same DNS error.

Yeah, the problem is completely with the subdomain. I can get to it fine now, but I know of at least 5 others who cannot.

I had set this up as a subdomain since there are things that I want to add later on and this would help keep things "tidy" but I'm beginning to rethink that decision. Is there some how I could have screwed up setting the subdomain up?

Both the www.jewelry.restoredspirit.com and restoredspirit.com/jewelry links give the same thing consistently, the restored spirit arts site.

The link without the www doesn't work.

How did you set up the sub-domain? Did you use an htaccess file or the sub-domain mapping tool?

restoredspirit

I used the sub-domain mapping tool in OPS .

The link without the www doesn't work.

I just had someone try that and they were able to get to it that way. They were not able to get to it with www in front of it this morning. I can get to the site both with or without the www in front. And yet there is still another person who cannot get to it either way.

I think it is time to contact support about the issue. They can check the settings at their end for the tool to see if the mappings have been done correctly.

The subdomain should work without the www and usually works with. Give them a link to this thread - they may understand the problem better even if it resolves correctly for them. It resolves for some people and not for others. I'm on a different computer to earlier in the day, it still works fine (with the www) for me.

Alrighty now. For those that had issues, please try again. I'm being told the problem is resolved now.

Nothing has changed for me. With the www in front of the sub-domain name it works, without (the 'normal' way) it doesn't.

You paid for them to mess up your website?! Can you delete your .htaccess file and create your own?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I created and uploaded the website.

Can you delete your .htaccess file and create your own?
I will look into that. I haven't done that before, but it may be a better solution.

Well, Valentine's day came and went and you weren't planning on buying jewelry, were you symo? ;) Hmm... maybe the site is being filtered for having a black background. Okay, this bothers me. Why are we getting different results? Stupid DNS stuff.

No... Mrs. Symo and I long ago agreed that we would always buy our own presents so we would always get exactly what we wanted :D

The sub-domain mapping tool is free so no money was exchanged for this.

There is no .htaccess file if the sub-domain tool is used. .htaccess is an alternative way. Unless the mapping is removed, then the .htaccess wouldn't make any difference. The mapping done by the tool is done before .htaccess gets it's hands on it.

jewelry won't be a sub-folder of htdocs so I wouldn't expect the restoredspirit.com/jewelry link to work.

jewlry.restoredspirit.com and www.jewelry.restoredspirit.com should both work.

The don't so I suggest strongly that you get back to support and ask them to make it work.,....

My mistake. I thought they were charging for that, too. So, you can't remove that yourself and try the .htaccess method? Or the php method? I know the sub-domain mapping is the better method if/when it works. I dealt with other web hosts where we had to use php scripts for the main index just to redirect domain names to subdirectories, because there was no allowable alternative.

The paid for tool is the domian mapping tool. It does the same things except you can also map www which is treated as a sub-domain. (I don't have that tool yet, although I'm saving up for it.)

I understand. Of course the sub-domain works before .htaccess and is higher in the hierarchy.

You would want to map the www version, even if people don't type it, for the sake of custom errors, redirects or other uses. You don't need to pay for the tool if you can do it another way, or are people having trouble with .htaccess and sub-domains (yet)?

People are always having trouble with .htaccess and sub-domains. The tool is available for those that don't wish to use .htaccess for sub-domains.

The paid for tool has other facilities, but I'm not sure what they are.

Fair enough.

Other facilities? If there is a hot tub or jacuzzi, let me know. The price would be worth it. ;)

Support is asking for a tracert results from someone who is NOT able to get to http://jewelry.restoredspirit.com Since I can now get to it, I'm unable to help. Anyone able to help me by posting their tracert?

restoredspirit
2-23-07, 08:33 PM
I chatted with PowWeb support earlier today and got nowhere basically. When I got home and was able to get a couple of traceroutes from different PCs I submitted a support ticket online and sent it in email.

Anyone have any idea what the average response time from them is? I was trying to find something online to this effect with no luck.

Thanks for the help earlier!

I'm still not able to load your subdomain and a trace route returns "unable to resolve host" even if I try tracing your restoredspirit.com (without the subdomain)

It looks like you have some DNS issues, possibly due to your listed name servers:
Domain servers in listed order:
NS3.MYDYNDNS.ORG
NS4.MYDYNDNS.ORG
NS1.POWWEB.COM
NS2.POWWEB.COM
NS5.MYDYNDNS.ORG

The mydyndns name servers seem to be causing some issues :

Glad that you got it sorted out finally.
