View Full Version : Powweb Hosted Websites... what is your speed?

There is more than 100,000 domain hosted at powweb, and what is your website speed like? I would like to do a small survey. And you can post your site and speed result here.

Use this speed test tool to check your website speed. Post the figure.

powwebreview.org 37.46 KB 10.88 seconds 0.29 seconds
powweb.com 52.31 KB 1.38 seconds 0.03 seconds

my site took 10 long seconds to load
How about yours?

0.42 seconds. Good eh? But it's a very simple web-site. Perhaps you were wanting to test a certain type of site? I think I can guess...

I get .3 and a .26 on my two domains and get a .8 on the one listed under charles' avatar.

There are a lot of factors involved in this timing.

I don't think it worth to do the speed test because the speeds are varied. My site sometimes it quick as a rocket and sometimes it slower than a turtle. And what makes my site slow is the mysql database.

I think this post is another way for charles to promote his site links now that they have been removed from his signature...but then I am just a cynic.

Test 1:
www.powweb.com: 1.55 seconds
new.geekons.com: 29.97 seconds

Test 2:
www.powweb.com: 1.5 seconds
new.geekons.com: 0.82 seconds

Test 3:
www.powweb.com: 1.55 seconds
new.geekons.com: 19.8 seconds

Now, the real question is, how do I get my website to be consistently fast while keeping it dynamic and interactive (meaning still database-driven with users, comments, forums, etc)?

More than likely Powweb.com is on a dedicated server and not a shared host like the domains they host. If you want the same speed as PowWeb.com, look for a dedicated host.

I tested this with 6 sites known to be on PowWeb. Results were 0.38, 0.30, 0.30, 0.54, 0.59 and 0.42 seconds. All good.

The highest value of 0.59 seconds was where the main page was a huge 115KB. None of the sites use MySQL or PHP on the front page, so the known bottlenecks are not encountered.

The results do not seem to include the graphics and logos etc on a page, only the page itself, and are thus of little use in the real world.

I have a dial-up connection. These results are so far removed from reality that they are irrelevant. For the 115K page plus its three graphics, one background file and one animated gif, we are looking at around 30 seconds.

One friend put up a page with 30 photos, each photo about 40K. They couldn't understand why nobody wanted to look at the photos. Lucky I have broadband at work.

Must have missed the :). My bad and apologies.

I've been there almost 10 (since the dee-vorce.) I'll have to move elsewhere since the building is going condo. I'm not spending beaucoup bucks for a one bedroom.

you guys should retest your sites now - you would be lucky to get under a minute if connected at all. Currently new.geekons.com and my own sites just time out. Powweb review site is up still though.

Even my non MYSQL sites are down!

You posted in the middle of that period so your site is expected to be down!

I read - I know - I am still not impressed the service has down graded recently to what it was like 12 months ago - and that was bad - very bad.

I am a long term customer of Powweb so believe me I know what I am talking about.

As long as they fix soon then no probs - but this has been down for quite some time now and has been going down for the last few weeks. I would be interested to see figures on account closures that powweb gets base solely on service issues. Must be huge.

Personaly I am forgiving. And to slack to move every thing elsewhere! so I choose to grumble only now and again! ;)

I noticed my site went down right when they said it would, I just didn't pay attention :p

Definitely no performance increase after the upgrades, but I know it wasn't a speed increase they were doing. With over 30 second reload times designing my site and ironing out the kinks is becoming a full-time-job with most of my time spent waiting on the page to reload. While I understand it takes a lot to manage the amount of servers and users they manage, I can't help but remember 2 or 3 years ago when my site was 10 times faster. I'd happily give up half the new features to have the performance I used to have.

I'm not too surprised, considering we've complicated things by adding multiple features and add-ons. The big benefit to powweb was they had only one plan with no upgrades, making it easier to manage and maintain. But I'm just speculating, the bottom line is I want a database driven site which is why I use powweb and it is getting increasingly slower and slower to the point of being nearly unusable. (My wife won't even go through my sites anymore to give me her opinion because it takes so long.)

Anyway, I'm just bitter because I'm so close to being done and every tiny step is taking forever, so please ignore any rudeness (and staff members are free to look me up when they are in NM and I'll buy them a cup of coffee for their troubles.)

www.gardensafari.net loads instantly here today.

http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/ also loaded instantly. I should revisit this website. My son got a PS2 for Christmas and it was toast in 4 weeks! I bought a new one while the other one sits. The store would not take it back and talking to Sony support is a joke. I should fix it like I would fix any computer, but Mark is still using the controller with the other console. Do you ship to the US? ;)

Yesterday starting about 3 or 4PM MST my site started behaving very nicely. My speeds are still VERY reasonable and it is a comfortable site to browse!

I'll post back every now and then with my speeds though, mainly so I have an idea as to what times are best and what times are worst.

(Loading times: 2.82, 0.84, 23.6, 0.87, 1.03)

So I've got one crazy long one in there, but earlier they were all over 20 or 30 seconds, so I'm definitely happy. :)

In the last week or two any page that requires SQL accessing goes extremely slow, and often times out completely. When I signed up here, about a month ago or so it was fine. Good speeds and dependable, now its just ****. I could try to access my site almost any time of the day, it doesnt matter, its always randomly slow or inaccessible.

I don't even use SQL very much - mainly because I can't stand those "This page has expired..." messages when I'm visiting a site and have to reload one just because I backed up to a previous page.

I use a guest book called Viper that I like, and it either times out or nearly so when loading, also my forums (phpBB) used to be fast, but now are very intermittent as to load times, occasionally timing out. And it's not like its a huge forum - i doubt there are 100 messages in it as I just reinstalled it.

Something in "Denmark" is not so good....

Well it has nothing to do with the size of hte forums, if anything is being accessed via SQL it'll chug if hte system hosting it is messed up.

I'm going to move my site if this continues over the next few weeks. Its garbage.

I don't have to run the tool. When I still had my database driven sites here they would time out all the time. My sites were down every day. Speed? = 0 as in no speed at all.

My simple html sites are still here and the speed ranges from ok to moderately slow during the day.

Mine seem to be all on mysql14, are others having serious problems with 14 also? I'm sure glad I decided not to go with Nuke or Joomla... would have been terrible waiting all that time for page generation lags.

Anybody know a real good forum system and guestbook that use flat files? It's a low-traffic forum, since it's a Christian devotional-type and spiritual-problem-solving forum basically more people stop by to READ what is in it rather than write in it that much, so there would not be massive read/writes at the same time...

Or is this a really bad idea... :p
