View Full Version : Wow, things actually work!
Hey, is it just me, or are things actually working properly for the first time in months?!? Since the upgrade to MySQL 5, my forum has actually worked well and loads quickly. After months of living with slowdowns and error messages, I hope I don't jinx everything by saying thanks to PowWeb for finally getting things right.
I've been under a lot pressure from people telling me to just dump PowWeb and move to a different host. I've been very patient with PowWeb... although I have to say that if things did not improve after the upgrade to MySQL 5, I would have moved my site to somewhere else.
It sure looks like I won't have to do that now... and for that, I'm very appreciative.
I'm assuming that all you other folks that had similar problems with your MySQL applications are now seeing things working as they should have been all along. Right?

My mysql applications are running much faster throughout the entire day (there where times of the day that it used to crawl).
Seems much more streamlined now. Thank you Powweb!
I guess i'm the only ugly pig here because I still have problems. Yesterday my site was unreachable for like 2 hours. And the other day it wicked slow that I can barely do anything with my website. There were sometimes it really quick though i have to admit that...but the slow times are more often than the quick time.

..I still have problems..
What MySQL server are you on? What app(s) are you running?
I agree, after a few hiccups after the switch things have been running pretty smoothly! :)
formerly mysql14 but now username.powwebmysql.com

formerly mysql14
You can still see the server numbers in mysqladmin when you select the database in the left pane.

One website still gets errors; it is the one on the server formerly known as mysql14. It does load fast, though. This old site is probably not compatible with MySQL5, but they lost some more database data. They can't transfer large databases successfully.
Nice to know I'm not the only one having problems still, Tien. I'm on custsql-pow14, and sometimes access to the mysql portions of my website are very s--l--o--w, sometimes timing out. I'm using only Gallery2 at the moment. I was really hoping that the update to 5 would solve this issue, but so far it has not.

I'm using only Gallery2
I don't know what features you are trying to use, but Gallery2 has some features that are not supported here (and other shared servers). The basic program is supposed to work here.
Just browsing the gallery or trying to edit the text associated with a picture takes forever. Nothing fancy. Sometimes it works just fine, so I doubt I'm using anything not supported. (BTW, you know of any of the things not supported so I can avoid them?)

you don't need ffmpeg to show movies in g2.
what ffmpeg does is autodetect the movie dimensions and generate a thumbnail.
Just add the movies and set the dimensions of the movie under edit movie.
If the movie is big you should use the local server method to add it.

Also, Jhead executable for exif Jpeg header and thumbnail manipulation. See this forum or OPS wishlist. This little item forced one member to leave!
I am sure there are other little issues. Basically, photo galleries that create thumbnails on the server and use a database can use more resources than a simple HTML page with a precreated thumbnail image that links directly to its enlarged image or HTML page embedding the image.
I am still having problems. I don't post often because I usually call tech support for the answers I need. Since the upgrade to MySQL 5, there are times when my forum loads amazingly fast. However, throughout each day and evening, there are times when it can take pages almost 2 minutes to load. If they don't load at all, eventually I receive this message (or one that is similar.)
Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /hermes/web10/b677/pow.domainname/htdocs/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 331
phpBB : Critical Error Could not connect to the database
I have had members tell me that they uploaded their trip reports to TripAdvisor because my forum was too slow. I've called tech support twice since the current MySQL 5 upgrade, to ask if what I'm seeing now is as good as it will get. All they can tell me is that they still working on some issues. I have been happy with powweb and have had my site as well as several others hosted here sine 2002. I have no issues with anything other than MySQL, and I had hoped the upgrade would solve the problems that many of us have experienced for months...but that has not happened yet in my case.
I just wanted to add my voice to others who are still experiencing difficulties. My forum is here:

Your plain phpBB loaded in a few seconds. Oh, darn. Now it is slower. Is this the latest stable version of phpBB?
Now it's as slow as ever again. :( http://www.domeofstars.com/forum
Has very brief periods of quick loading but most of the time it's really sluggish.
Yvette, thanks for your response. We keep the forum updated and my Adm is very vigilant about optimizing the DB and keeping it clean of spam. "Plain PHPbb" is right - LOL! It's about as plain as one of these boards can be, but when it loads as fast as the rest of the funbeaches pages, it works like a charm. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, but they are becoming mighty tired fingers!

My non-MySQL pages work fine when Gallery2 is having problems, but to me that means it's a DB server issue. I do agree that static pages use less resources than those that use a DB, but the DB pages are easier to maintain (for me at least) and can provide interactivity that a static page just can't do.

Plain versions of forums are faster and easier to manage. Some people have slow forums, because they install every language or mod they find. They sometimes allow visitors to choose from many themes/skins/templates. I have seen forums that loaded slowly for that reason. Your forum is easy to read.

I agree that you get interactivity with Gallery2 scripts. There are times when static HTML pages will do, but sometimes you want other features. BrandonMiller has Gallery2 working fine and had problems with other things. Well, he solved the Joomla problem - he changed his own password! Maybe you can ask him for help.

I just checked again to see how the database servers are doing now. Still seems very slow, I even got one timeout in less than 10 tests.
See the database server name in MySQL admin? Maybe, it seems to timeout however when I test right now ...

Oh, it did not timeout, but it was very slow. I am still on number 10. Anyone more on 10?
I still cannot get phpMyAdmin (launched from Ops) to load completely. My site is a dog too. Occasionally it loads fine, but that has only lasts for a page or 2.
Ops has been really slow too (~1 minute to load each page).

Please post outage/slowness issues on the related numbered thread (MySQL10, or whatever) -- you can locate it inside phpMyAdmin... we'd like to have some handle on which servers have problems when and posting in a general thread isn't going to help in that regard...
