View Full Version : Why offer Joomla?
Let me preface this by saying I've been with Powweb for years and have set up a number of sites here for my clients. I have been in the habit of recommending Powweb hosting, but must admit that I don't feel I can do do wholeheartedly anymore.
To start, why does Powweb offer Joomla and other CMSes when there are clearly MySQL connectivity problems?
I recently set up two Joomla sites here. One is a blog and runs very fast and we couldn't be happier. The other times out, gives 500 Internal Server Errors, etc. Same setup, more or less. The one that's barely loading is for a public radio station in San Diego, KPBS, and needless to say they have an audience that would like to access the site, but can't. This is not good! Occasional slowness is par for the course, but MySQL timeouts and server errors are ridiculous. One time, maybe, OK, but a whole week or longer? This is a well put together Joomla, small database, page caching to take some strain off of MySQL, etc.
I've chatted with technical support and it is being escalated, but this is the second time in as many weeks, and it's not getting better. Judging by the messages in this forum, it hasn't been good in some time. If I wanted a plain HTML site all would be well, but CMS is the way to go for me.
I appreciate that the massive growth Powweb's undergone can take its toll, and that Powweb staff is working on the issues, however when you have a live site with steady visitors, you just can't wait around for weeks for things to get resolved. By then the visitors will have left for good.
So I am expressing my extreme frustration here, because I really like Powweb's hosting but right now can't stand the MySQL slowness. Please, do something - this makes both Powweb and myself look unprofessional! My client's very very frustrated, and I will ahve to switch hosts if there's no improvement soon. As I said tech support is on it, but I'm sure the problem is systemic and won't be resolved soon. It's just a sad situation all around.
It usually helps to provide a link so that others can see the problem first hand. And if you've been around for a while, you should be aware of the MySQL problems that are going on and the attempts to remedy them.
I'd also suggest reading the "stickies" located at the top of this section of the forum and look for posts from dmacminn. There's quite a bit of info to be gathered from doing that.
I was asked to provide a link for my Joomla sites. Here they are:
http://www.envisionsandiego.org
http://www.knowitalz.com
The issue is simply the MySQL slowness, and I am aware these are being worked on, but it has been many weeks now. Two weeks ago it suddenly got better, but now it's just as slow as before. My point was simply: if Powweb knows there are MySQL slowness issues, how does it make sense to offer Joomla, which requires MySQL? Both of my sites are Joomla-based, and right now the San Diego one takes anywhere from a minute to over three minutes to load a simple page.
As a test, I also have a basic PHP script that does not use MySQL:
http://www.envisionsandiego.org/date.php
That loads instantaneously.
Note that only the San Diego site appears to be slow. The other one has been running fine, but both use the same version of Joomla. They use different database servers.

I look at it this way. If I go to a fruit shop that advertises cheap banana's only to find the bananas skin is marked I can buy the banana's or goto another fruit shop and pay full price for unmarked fruit. To demand the shop owner remove his banana sign is silly. They aren't A1 quality but are still banana's just the same. And most won't tell if I used cheap or A1 once I make a banana milkshake out of them.
By far the majority have no problem with Powwebs MySQL. So why would they take their sign down? Powweb does not hide the fact there are problems for some, and are working toward a resolution. You can repair/optimise/trim down your database etc if your milkshake doesn't taste right. You are free to shop elsewhere if you require an A1 superior product, just be ready to pay for it.

I have multiple Joomla and Mambo Sites with Powweb, but only the sites on former MYSQL14 appears to be unbearable slow.
Check out for yourself: www.jclemens.com , www.hdwebdesign.com , www.jwhitson.us ,
- just to name a bunch. I also have a couple shopping carts with Powweb, and they too work fine most of the time. I simply would wish that they could assing me with a different MySql server, and I would be happy...again

See, this is what I say for months now...only the MySQL 14 based site is really slow. I have some on 1, 7, 8, 9, 11, 15 and unfortunately my own site www.jclemens.com on 14. :(
Is there anything in the Powweb rules, that won't allow me to use one of the other databases? I know that an external won't work since the ports are closed due to security concerns...

No there is no set rule stopping you using any database/server you have paid for, can access and utilize. Powweb will rarely (very rarely to never now) move anyone's database from one server to another for them. Certainly however if you can switch config files, database backups, etc to put your website on say 11 and a less critical site on your 14 there's nothing stopping you.

Thanks! I just posted a ticket with Powweb, just to be sure. I know that it works, since I switched databases before... ;)

That is not a bruised banana. That is a banana that does not exist. :D
There is reason to believe that the time limit for this problem is Dec. 12:
http://forums.powweb.com/showpost.php?p=444081&postcount=4
If you can tolerate it until then, you might just stay where you are. If things are not fixed by then, by all means... move it to whatever server you believe will work better.
It's an issue of service at all. If you run a MySQL-based site and MySQL keeps on being slow (taking over 45 seconds to do anything), you don't have a working site. It's not a spotted banana, it's just the banana peel. Anyway I do hope the MySQL upgrades will be complete by Dec.12. I would like to avoid moving to another server if I can.

They need to fix the problem. This problem has been unresolved for months and I know they've been working on it and trying to remedy the problem. The end result is the same. Substandard MySQL service.
Powweb's reputation is taking a beating because of this issue. A stitch in time saves nine. Over time, it's gonna hit them in the pocket. They should do whatever they have to do, spend whatever they have to spend to get this situation resolved. It's really disappointing. :(
