I formatted my hard and everything looks great, except I lost sound. There was sound right after I finished installing Windows XP professional. But somehow, I don't have sound any more. I checked Audio Properties and I also checked to see if all the drivers are fine. I couldn't find any problem. Of course, I checked all the connections from my speaker and my microphone.

Where else should I check now? Please any advice will be greatly appreciated. I use Skype to communicate with my clients and I am in trouble now...

If you can access the web, make sure you load the updates for hardware. That could be causing the problem.

As Doc said...

and, more info would be helpful - what kind of computer, and (more importantly) is there a sound card, or is audio on the motherboard?

:D
(Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

The audio driver is almost always the problem driver for me when I reformat hard drives.

Left-click the Start button, then right-click on My Computer and select Properties. In the System Properties window, select Hardware tab, click Device Manager. See Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

Do you have an external sound/video card? If so, are you trying to use it instead of onboard sound/video? In the past, I have installed the drivers for both just in case. You can go to the manufacturer website to see if there are more recent drivers for your hardware and operating system.

The drivers should be installed AFTER installing Windows OS. You can remove and reinstall the existing driver, if it is the most recent and correct driver.
