PHP web pages

Do the search engines recognize php files? I read in a book that I needed to place html versions of each page on my website for the search engines................ Then at the bottom of the page, there was a menu linking to the pages so the search engines could find them.

Does this make sense or is it a waste of time and how do the search engines view PHP files?
