First of all, upfront, Nero's technical support either doesn't speak English or just cuts-and-pastes responses to e-mailed technical support questions.
That said, here's my issue. I have Nero 8 Ultra Edition installed, and it works great except one major flaw. Any time I try to open or save a file, and the program pops open a file dialog, suddenly Nero Scout (which I have disabled) loads in the background, with NMIndexStoreSvr.exe taking 30-70% of CPU cycles. The Open dialog freezes until I open Task Manager and shut down NMIndexStoreSvr.exe, then Nero immediately recovers and works great.
NMIndexStoreSvr.exe is the file that searches for media files on my drives (4 hard drives totalling 1TB in storage) and catalogs the media files for "use by other Nero programs". This is not a feature I care to use, and have shut down the Scout service in the setup program. Yet, it ignores my settings and loads the program anyway, every file I try to open a media file in Nero.
When I contacted Nero support, their answer was cut-and-paste from a forum post (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f48/nero-answer-about-scout-pathetic-233869/):Nero Scout is currently required for some of our applications such as Nero MediaHome and Nero Home to properly function. The indexing services running in the background are also necessary for creating and maintaining the Nero Scout multimedia database, making it more convenient for a user to stream or playback content from an indexed database than it would be to search the system for content. It is also less time consuming and much more user-friendly, especially if the user has their PC configured to run as a media center. Nero Scout is simply a database and is therefore not system stressing or resource consuming, nor does it require much storage place. We have significantly improved the performance of the indexing services and we have implemented them to run only when the system is idle. As soon as there is any user activity, the services become inactive. There is also an option for deactivating Nero Scout and the related services completely. For future versions, we will evaluate other possibilities regarding Nero Scout and its services. I have to say, this type of question always amuses me, since I do not hear many people complaining about iTunes or its services, which are far more system stressing and invasive than Nero Scout.
Obviously this program isn't as important as the company thinks it is if the program runs perfectly after I Ctrl-Alt-Delete and kill the problem file.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, same response. I installed it on another computer, same response. Due to other issues with my computer, I installed it on my system after replacing a failed boot drive, as the one-and-only program installed on Windows XP SP2, same issue.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
