I have a question that I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me with. I have three computers at home with a wireless router. All of them have internet access through this router, and I have been able to network the two running windows XP together for file sharing and remote printing. But I can't get the Windows 2000 to show up in the network. I have read all the online help pages I could find with no luck. Any idea of what extra steps I may need to do to get Windows 2000 to show up on the network? For what it is worth, I am also unable to ping this machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If there is another forum where this may be more appropriate, I would love to know about it. thanks!

is the computer in the same workgroup?

can the 2000 machine see the other computers?

I think the most significant problem is that I can't ping the computer.

I noticed that the subnet mask for all the computers is 255.255.255.0 which would mean the first three sets of digits are my network address. In other words, these numbers need to be the same on the IP addresses of all computers in the network. They are the same for the other 2 computers that are working in the network, but the one "problem" computer has a different IP address.

I think that might be why I cannot ping it. But I am not sure what to do about this...

IN my past experience, I found that Win 2000 did not readily set up on any wireless network... check this site out.

Good luck.

the win2k box has a different network address then the other 2 computers but can still access the internet via the wireless router? That's bizarre.

Are all of the computers set to use DHCP to get an IP address, or do you set the IP's manually on each one?

Also, go to a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd...you might have to type command in 2000, i don't remember) and run ipconfig. Post the results for all 3 computers.

And, one more thing, log into the wireless router, does it have a page where you can see what devices are attached to it? If it does, do all 3 computers show up on that?

yeah, it almost sounds like it is connecting to a different router

Probably his neighbours haha! Sounds like conflicting IP numbers.

It's always fun to piggyback on someone else. Where I work, there are a couple of hotels nearby that put out a strong enough signal, we get them a block away! Makes it easy when we have out of towners who need access.

sharktacos - make an internet connection with the 2000, then power off your router. if the connection is still active, you are connecting thru a different router.

Good idea, snowmaker. He's got to be picking it up from somewhere.

Yep, you all were right. The gateway IP was different. I got it fixed and everything is working now. Thanks everyone :D
