View Full Version : Folder Sizes and Sorting
i have noticed that my disk usage has ballooned from 95Mb to 605Mb overnight.
I have had a quick look around and cant see anything that has changed.
is there a way to see what size folders are, folder by folder?
eg: sort folders by size etc
thanks :)
(sorry if this has already been posted, i couldnt find it using the search function)

Check your email which counts against your quota. My mail takes up MUCH more space than my website!

I know they were moving stats and log files into our directories and believe that those were now going to go against our disk space. I don't know as they would have been over 500MB. The other option is that the size was incorrect before and now they have updated it to reflect closer to the actual size. I looked at a couple of your images and at the larger size they were like 800k and 900k. Others were smaller, so hard to say without doing the math.

possibly the log files but i doubt it.
most of my images are around the 80-100k mark.
it doesnt matter really, just curiosity more than anything.
i assume its ok to delete the log files/stat files out of the directory if i dont require them?

You can delete them, just don't expect them back to use for other reports, etc. ... when they're gone, they're gone....

I have not seen stats saved in any of the accounts I manage (yet), though I read they were going to do that. If/when the stats folder appears in the website server space, those files would add to the total disk space.

If you login to OPS > Main > Overview and then click on Details under disk usage, you can see what is being used by your website and logs separately. (http://members.powweb.com/webControl/DiskQuota.bml)
As far as file sizes for specific files and folders, I'd suggest checking that via FTP. My FTP client, Transmit, has folder size calculations off by default. Once enabled, folder sizes are calculated (which slows things down considerably).
You are using 1.02 MB for your logs
oh well.
thanks progravix, but i dont use a mac thingy :)

I didn't say you needed to use Transmit. I was only relaying how my FTP client behaved. :-)

I will again suggest mail if you use Outlook or another email client and it is not removing from the PowWeb server. Or did you recently install software and/or created backups that are saved on your server? Why wouldn't you be able to see additional files unless they are not visible through your FTP software, but they are visible through OPS File Manager.

I beg to differ. I can't delete anything from my stats folder and have mentioned this before:

Check the permissions on the stats folder. Mine were set to 555 so I changed it to 755 and was able to delete the contents. And yes, it was done through OPS.

Doc, you KNEW I was going to ask if you changed permissions through OPS! ;)
I'll have to check that out Doc. I tried to change permissions on individual files through FTP and that didn't work.
[EDIT] You're a genius Doc! Why you can't change permissions through FTP I don't know, but your suggestion worked like a champ.
Thanks,
Kevin
Glad to be of help, Builder, and to prove I'm not totally useless as my boss says I am. :)

I had a similar experience on another web host which is why I mentioned logging into the control panel. It figures that Doc knew what I was thinking.
Remember the people that could not see .htaccess files through their own FTP? That was here, right? I deal with too many hosts to remember! I know that happened elsewhere a few months ago, too. I remember looking at the File Manager thingy in OPS here with a similar problem. We are so used to doing things in our own FTP program, that we sometimes forget that there is another way of doing things.
