View Full Version : FTP Quotas - how to stop them?

I have no problem uploading large files with FTP accounts that I created months ago. However, accounts that were created more recently appear to be limited to 1 MB uploads.

I filed a support ticket on 04/21/2008 5:14 PM EDT. (Support Ticket #4985540)

The first response indicated that my issue was escalated to an email specialist, even though it regarded FTP.

The second response told me that the permissions may not be correct. What does that mean to me? The OPS page does not offer anything more than a username, password and path entry.

The third response indicated that I should reset the account (I assumed that they meant I should delete it and then create a new one). I did. There was no improvement.

The fourth response said that the Powweb tech was able to connect with no problem. I never said we couldn't connect.

Seeing that Powweb support is incapable of an intelligent assessment and resolution, has anyone else encountered an FTP quota? How was it resolved?

Here is the FTP log snippet...

Passive and regular FTP transfers were attempted. They had the same result. The test AVI file is 3MB.

Update: It appears that the quota is an overall quota. It does not matter what file size is attempted. I could not upload a 14 KB GIF file.

According to the Powweb technician in a live chat window, our account was misconfigured and we could only have 200 MB. I've been with Powweb since 2001 and don't recall a hosting package that small.

And of course, this does not explain how the other FTP accounts still worked for us.

But it is fixed now so I'm on my way.

Just keep an eye out for new FTP accounts that you set up. The quota/limit might have been imposed with the OPS script/function that adds new FTP accounts.

As we don't have quota limits on FTP uploads check the allocation of package space and the split between e-mail and web-space. You could (unlikely, but worth checking) have filled the web-space. If your quotas don't match recent sign-up offerings you can get them increased by asking support nicely ;)

EDIT:
As a test I created a new FTP account, uploaded a number of 10Kb-1.2Mb images and a 49Mb zip file of those images. All went OK with the FTP program WS_FTP Pro.

I need to check on this becasue I have been getting some odd errors and thought it had to do with my system. I have been attempting to upload files and sometimes it works, and other times it appears the file is uploaded, but the transfer either freezes or errors out indicating I am exceeding my 4 connections. The result is the file is there, but is 0k.

I am seeing this on all three accounts that I have. Two are over a year old and the other one was created late December/Early January.

Maybe some firewall, AV, A-spyware or other software update has caused the issue. Or, if you'd been in Britain, an ISP upload limit has been reached. Have you tried a different program for FTP than your 'normal' one? By downloading a program you don't normally use the firewall will be forced to ask if you wish to allow external access by the program.

It sounds very much like either an 'account' problem or a machine/software configuration problem from here.

I will have to go back and check firewall settings, that might be it. I have tried multiple programs with the same end result. I hadn't thoguht too much about firewall because it isn't consistent. Sometimes I will be able to upload 3-4 files before it stops. the last file that it is attempting to upload usually shows 100% transfer on my side, but never indicates a succesful completion.

I have not had to upload alot of files, so the file manager or another work around has done the job for now.

At work I use the browser as I'm not 'allowed' an FTP program to be installed although the port 21 is open :D Maybe this is a work-around you could try. For me, it gets through multiple firewalls and proxies without a problem at full speed.

As I've access to multiple machines I sometimes try doing uploads with more than one simultaneously but find that as they all have the same external IP address only a few (sometimes as few as 2, but sometimes 4) work at a time. It doesn't matter if I use the same FTP userID or not, only a limited number are allowed.
