I know placing a big magnet near a CRT monitor can distort it causing shadows cast across the screen etc. What about an LCD monitor? Do high magnetic fields (flux) or high electrical fields (EMF) stuff LCD up too? I want to velcro a Sony Passport external drive onto the back of a Compaq laptop LCD screen.

I've got a stack of external drives (mostly Iomega) sitting about 6 inches from my 19" monitors, and have never had a problem.
I assume the LCD in the laptop's the same as a regular LCD monitor, so I'd guess you'd be safe.
I've got a SimpleTech USB drive that I just ran all over my widescreen LCD and it didn't do anything. I've also got my speakers right up against it too and no squigglies. And a quick Google search provided this (http://www.overclock.net/monitors-displays/140198-lcd-magnets-2.html).
I'd be more worried about the EMF in the other direction.
