I installed WordPress v 2.3.2 using InstallCentral. The WordPress homepage asks me to upgrade to the newest version (v 2.5.something.)

InstallCentral lists v2.3.2 as installed, and the "Upgradable" column is marked "No."

Why doesn't InstalCentral install the newest version? Is my version really not upgradable?

It is upgradable but only if you go through the WP site. The upgrade is not available through Install Central.

And, if you upgrade an install-central-installation, you will lose the ability to uninstall it without the help of support.

upgrades to IC applications happen when they can...you are better off installing the latest version from scratch.

Thanks to both for your quick replies. I'll upgrade myself.

I know you guys probably can't answer this, but I'd still like to know why the latest version is not available.

PowWeb doesn't change the install version every time a new version comes out. They try to stay with a stable version (or so I've heard.)

(Personally speaking), I'd like to upgrade InstallCentral out of existence ... I think we'd be better off with some tutorials and the help available here and get out of Installers all together -- OpenSource just changes too fast and often for the latest version to be available.

The Product team use the same kind of scheduling for all Products, either once a year or in rare cases, twice a year upgrades are performed on any product/feature --- otherwise, it would be constant chaos with upgrades breaking some things and fixing others --- in the end, that really makes no one any happier...

That said, I join my voice to those who encourage others to try an install from scratch -- there are lots of people here who have already been through it and can help along the way...

[Officially speaking...] Powweb continues to offer the InstallCentral with periodic (annual/bi-annual) upgrade offerings for the third-party OpenSource applications most requested or asked about. The InstallCentral continue to work well for many customers who have no real web scripting experience and simply want to get the application up quickly, without significant customization or "feature set chasing".

I installed WP from IC and then upgraded manually. The instructions provided by WP are very easy to understand.

I would suggest upgrading prior to doing any real tweaking of the application. It makes life easier on you.

I totally agree and we can continue to say it, but I don't see this changing.

I would suggest backing up the website as it stands now first. Manually back up the database through phpmyadmin. Then try upgrading. If the upgrade doesn't work, you can go back to the last version or install a fresh new version. I still recommend manual installations over Installl Central.
