I could have sworn I saw this somewhere on the forums before, but I just cant find it right now!

I used auto screenrecorder pro to do some video tutorials (its been about a year!). if I recall correctly, it saves an avi by default, and generates an swf if you ask for it. The avi's all came out fine, but some of the swf's turned into red screens. audio still plays fine even with the red screen.

SO, instead of recreating the tutorials, I thought it would be easiest to convert the avi's into swf's. the auto screenrecorder program does not appear to allow you to do this (dont see why not).

I did do a google search, and it seems like a ton of trialware out there. I found a free one called 'super', but when I went to run it the antivirus software flagged something as a trojan!

I saw ffmpeg, but I dont get it so much...

There's my story. anyone have any suggestions for converting avi to swf?

I suppose I could play the avi and re-capture the tutorial using the screen recording software, but I'd prefer just converting the file format :)

I use Camtasia Studio. It's not free and I'm unsure what limits are imposed on the trial version but the paid version does a great job of AVI to SWF or FLA. Flash and Swish can import AVI as frames and obviously can save as SWF or FLA though often drop the audio and bork the frame rate.

linux and mac people might like this. Its ffmpeg and very powerful. Convert all your movies to flv with a single command!(would take forever to convert:P)

Hopefully this helps you with ffmpeg. Unless your a linux CLI person its very hard to get running.

FRAPS is one program that I know of that just records your screen and saves to an.avi. Its a pay for windows software but it does work quite well.

This will take it from avi to flv, if that helps (for Windows OS).

I use it convert quick-time to wmv and it works great for that.

Just found out that they also have a Mac version.

Thanks symo - always like to hear from 'real' people. I've been duped by blogs that were less then unbiased...

from dbrazzels's link I found ffmpegx, which worked fantastic - no command line!
