View Full Version : MySQL passwords being changed constantly
My issue is that my MySQL passwords keep getting changed. I've changed each database and my OPS/FTP passwords probably five times in the past couple weeks.
Just now I've changed my OPS password and my WordPress db password and it's broken (unable to connect) again. What's going on? I see no evidence that I've been hacked.
I tried Support chat. They couldn't help and escalated it, but said it'll be 24-48 hours before I get a response. Ticket 5713010
[Sorry, this should be under the MySQL topic.]
it's something specific to your account, i'm afraid. My passwords have never changed unless I did it or Powweb sent an email about doing it for security or whatever. So either someone's got a backdoor into your site and keeps messing with you, or there's something funky going on with your domain/package/account/whatever.
I would second that. I have not had issues with MySQL passwords.

Are sure that its the mysql password that's the reason for the "could not connect to mysql" message you are getting?
Do you reset the password for that mysql user in ops and it works again?
If you change the password in ops for the mysql user. You will need to go into your wordpress config file and update the password that is in there.
I don't want to waste anyone's time since someone from PW seems to be working on my ticket. However, I'd like to answer the questions in case it'll help someone else. Here's the scenario:
1. I change the password for a WordPress MySQL database.
2. I update the wp_config.php file with the new password.
3. WordPress works great.
4. Five minutes to two hours later, WP fails with "Cannot connect to db."
5. I go into OPS and set the MySQL db password to what I set it to in Step 1.
6. WP works great again.
This seems to be happening with all of my MySQL dbs: WP, Gallery2, Joomla, and phpBB.
Update: While cleaning up the extra logins Support created, I seem to have stumbled on the reason. It seems that it's now A Bad Thing to use your OPS login as your MySQL db login. I'm not sure why this worked for years and broke after we were all told to change our OPS passwords, but there we are. Perhaps PW can add some code to the MySQL Management page to prevent people from creating logins the same as their OPS login?
Why would the two even affect one another? That's quite bizarre. But also not something i do, which would explain why I never ran into the problem. It's also bad practice, to be honest... you don't want to share passwords across different things, not on a website.
I have no idea how they'd affect each other. They didn't share passwords, only user names. That seems to have been the problem. The PW rep says it was "temporary" but it happened over and over for two weeks until I changed user names.
bizarre. The two would presumably be stored in different databases, so that shouldn't happen, but who knows. If you get any more info, I'd love to hear about what happened. It piques my interest. :)

I am suffering the same problems with mySQL password resets on my account (as skst). I have emailed for support and have contacted support via phone. First I was told nothing was wrong, then this morning, when we have CRITICAL *TIME SENSITIVE* news to post, databases are down. I returned to mySQL -- grumbling, thinking I have to change the password settings AGAIN... and lo and behold, I can't even log in through the administrative panel.
A phone call to support tells me PowWeb is "having technical issues" and there is no guesstimate on when my site will be back up. This is UNACCEPTABLE. My frustration cannot be described. I may lose my job, as this isn't the first, second, or third time our site has been disrupted without warning or notice.
Why is there no news on your announcements page about down time? about mySQL database problems?
Note that attempts to change the mySQL database password through admin now results in a '500' error page (from PowWeb) that directs me to.... PowWeb.NET - which isn't set up yet. ????
Help! My boss doesn't understand it's circumstances out of my control that prohibit the site from being viewed. Thanks...
Another case for not using a shared host as a business environment.

I'd _just_ finished authoring a plain html page to put up to notify our audience of a temporary disruption to service when the web site (and its mySQL databases) returned. The site loads slowly, but its content appears to be intact.
Thank you for resolving the issue, but please notify customers of these issues when they occur. Thanks!

Two minutes later, the databases are down again... Time to post the html page. :(
I'll keep checking..
Be reminded that the forums are not an official comm channel either to/from PowWeb. Staffers do drop by on occasion.
Solidarity, your problem is probably related to this thread (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=81813)
I second what Doc says about using a shared host, ANY shared host, for mission critical work. You need a dedicated server, a contingency plan for failure and most of all, a backup!
You don't get the dedicated server for the price you pay at any shared host. Too many things are 'out of your control' if you're not on a dedicated system. If it is truly mission critical to have the website up 24/7 365/365 then a bigger budget or a NEW BOSS is needed!

hmm, that thread is privileged. i wonder if it is related to premier support.
mom and pop sold out to the big box and left me to self service
Not related to premier support, simply the fact that User reported outage threads die after the outage has passed and no posts made for approx. 1 week. That thread 'died' on March 12th, may it rest in peace.
No conspiracy, no premier support and at the time of my original posting the thread was well alive.
