Hi all
I write this with the on-screen keybaord faclity as I am unable to use my conventional keyboard.
I took my keyboard next door to a friends computer and alas it worked fine, no solution in spending the small sum a new one would cost then.
But what could the problem be seeing everything is plugged in ok etc?

You unplugged your keyboard and know it worked on another computer. Did you try to plug it back into your own computer and check the Device Manager to see if the driver is corrupt? You may need to reinstall it. You did say it "used to" work with your computer.

When my keyboard stops working, it is time for new batteries. I have a wireless. I would have asked you about that if you hadn't said you unplugged it to try it with another computer.

What type of connection is it USB, PS2, or something else?

Did you try your friend's keyboard on your PC? That would tell you where the problem lies. I've been in IT for 30 years and never loaded drivers for a wired keyboard.

Device driver,,,,I wonder how to find it

Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, click Device Manager button. Click the plus symbol in front of Keyboards to see the driver installed on your computer. It usually tells you if there is a problem, but you can use your Windows CD to try to reinstall it.

Hi Yvette
Alas,,,,I did as you said and keyboards were not on the list of items there, I checked out a few things in case but I can't find keyboards by another name either.:(

this is important...Not to be insulting, but clear...is it a rectangle, circle, or something else?

Maybe these links will help you identify which type of keyboard you have..
Keyboard Connectors (http://www.nullmodem.com/Keyboard.htm)
Keyboard Connector (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/kb/const/otherConnector-c.html)

Since keyboards were not on the list, you need to look under USB if the keyboard connects to the PC tower with a flat, rectangular connection as the others are trying to discover. The name may not appear as the exact brand or type of device. It could be a generic driver.

Circular.....but what ever, I decided there was no mundane solution and opted to go magickal, the issue is resolved!:D
I did get rid of a new user account on my computer, did a scan that produced 21 'minor infections' and lo behold my keyboard works, thank goodness too, the on-screen thing might carry the day but I wouldn't want to live with it.
Thanks all the same everyone.

If you have a USB, open the Device Manager and uninstall the universal host controllers. then restart the computer. They will reinstall by themselves, since they are plug and play.

PS2 connections are not plug and play. If you disconnect a ps2 keyboard, you must plug it back in and restart the computer and reinstall the drivers on the Windows CD or the manufacturer CD (if applicable).

I was typing while you guys were posting. It sounds like you had a registry error with the user you removed. Glad it is working!
