Just curious is anyone here has any recommendations for video editing software. The idea is to take large videos in a variety of formats, break them into smaller clips, then stitch some of the clips back together. Preferably the app would be functional with a large range of codecs... preferably matroska and wmv. This rules our Premiere, but in my experience Premiere isn't all that great (though I'm no expect).

So...any suggestions? This is just for personal use.

Not many editors will import the little known .mkv file format, AVIMux-GUI and VirtualDubMod can. Otherwise Pinacle is awesome though expensive. I also like Camtasia Studio for the basic file types mpg wmv avi. If you're on a pc you should already have Windows Movie Maker (uprgade to version 2.x if not already) which handles wmv mpg avi asf m1v mp2v etc. For mpg TMPGenc has very advanced features like editing of GOP structure and is great for resyncing audio.

I'd start with VirtualDubMod satis. It supports mkv avi and mpg, I don't know about wmv.

thanks for the recommendation. I found its sourceforge page and grabbed it, though it popped up a warning about limited matroska support. It looks like it hasn't been updated since 2005, but as long as it does what I need I don't really care. :)
